take the rotor arm out

or...

take the king lead

or...

remove the coil pack plug.

something along these lines will do the trick

thing is.... removing the relay or the rotor arm stops it being driven away but removing the steering wheel stops it being broken into in the first place.... if they cant see a way to drive it they probably wont bother breaking into it.... also removes the possibility of it being towed away!!

My mate did 50 miles in his Elise with no steering wheel!

Snap off hub, steering wheel in boot - pulled release cable and it came off in his hand.

Drove back home, then to Sinclairs just by grabbing round the hub.

I await the "help 205 won't start after being sat up" thread in a few months time

It'll be the rotor arm you left out

Sounds like a fascinating story, but I don't understand it from the way you've worded it  . Can you ellaborate?

It's under the dash just above the driver's right knee. If you take the lower dash panel off then it's easy to see.

He couldn't open the boot where his steering wheel was as the cable snapped.

A copper mate told me of a car thief he caught driving with a pair of mole grips

As said above he had a snap-off type steering wheel.

The S1 Elises had pretty crappy security, so he always took the wheel off and put in the "boot" whilst parked up. With no steering lock it seems a logical security device.

Unfortunately they also have pretty crappy boot release mechanism, where the boot release cable has a limited life.

We'd just been into town to the public car park, paid the ticket then jumped into car. He pulled boot release and it pulled clean through. As the ticket had been paid, he drove out of the car park using just the hub to steer.

It was surprisingly easy to steer so long as we weren't stationary so we drove to my parents to sort it. Tried loads of things to get boot open with no joy, so he ended up driving back to his, then over the Lotus dealer he uses the following day to get it sorted.

They drill through the rear clam behind the number plate, flick over the release lever, then charge a small fortune to fit a new cable.

Mines going to be off the road for a while too. Thankfully its just had an aftermarket ECU (and mapped) & wiring loom installed. So I'll be removing my aftermarket ECU and keeping it in the house.

Though I do like the idea of taking the steering wheel off to put off people trying to nick it.

could be jump started tho ;)

Still needs the battery to run doesn't it. Thought all the power to run electrics, sparks etc etc used the battery and the alternator just charged the battery?

Apologies if I'm wrong on that one :)

The alternator generates power, which is still in place, I drove a car with no battery by hooking jump leads onto the battery terminals, started the engine, removed the jump leads and covered the positive terminal with gaffa tape to stop it shorting!

While my 306 was sat at the end of the street for a couple of months I took the ecu and steering wheel out.

Ah ok sorry then, was thinking about how if your alternator breaks the car will still run off of the battery. Hadn't considered that it worked the other way around as well :D
