Clocking Clocks!

Recommended Posts

philfingers

I have some later clocks with the numbers on the aux gauges and want to set them to the mileage on my car. I got the little milometer cluster out, but what now. Did a search and couldn't find anything. I thought this was easy on older cars but doesn't appear to be the case!

I think WP might have done this, Phil, might be worth a PM?

I have sort of, I just used the speedo/odometer head from the original cluster.

I do know Boombang has sorted his rally car to read 000000 though

drill on the speedo cable?

yep tried that, takes foo king ages! it's not so easy as just clicking the dials around with a pencil, like i magined it would!

PS the trip in the original doesn't work so can't swap over either.. . . .. . .

The electrics fried on mine and wanted to do the same as a new secondhand set had more miles.

I tried to experiment with my original one so I wouldn't damage my replacement by forcing the number around with a sharp object.

they didn't want to turn without turning all the rest (they all must be linked together) so without doing any more damage I ended up swapping over all the electric circuit film from my new secondhand one to my original.

I must have stressed something though as every 1000 miles they read

1 7/6 0000

For a couple of hundred miles, untill they even out now.

edit:- yes my cars just clocked 170,000 miles!

If you use a drill, you could leave it on for a frew hours and come back to it.

You could work out mathmatically roughly how long it will take to get to the number you want.

It would be interesting to know this just to see how long "foo king ages" is!

i stripped the cluster down. it took me a couple of hours to suss how the thing worked, but at least i knocked approx 145k off

it now reads only 4 miles, but that was to make sure it was/is working properly

Simple as stripping down, carefully disassemble and put back together showing as you want.

Issue is keeping them all properly in line, and that when they start turning you can get them out of synch - usually something like when it turns from 999 to 1000 it turns to 11000.

It is a fiddly job though, takes ages to do properly.

Afraid I've not got any spare sets about, otherwise could've done them for you and sent them up.

Buy a new mileage clock, far easier than drilling it tbh.

Those numbered clocks afaik are not the later type but are from the automatic 205/309's, i have one from

an auto 309 gti with 59k on the clock. Im not sure if they come in any other specific 205 models though.

If needs be Phil, bring it down with you when you come to collect the ARB and I'll do it for you - it's very quick and easy to do

All you need to do is remove the metal bar at the back of the odometer, spin the numbers round to read what you want and put it back.

Thanks Anthony, I'll bear it in mind.

Not so easy as that, well not on mine. They are indeed all linked together, can you seperate the whole lot? I'm usually really good with stuff like this, so it's bugging me!

So far as I know the 'numbered' clusters came with later 205s. By that I mean the water temp for example has actuall temps marked on it instead of just bars. I'm sure some like Welshpug posted pics of his too at some point

Just a thought, but if you're only swapping because of the values on the auxilery guages, why don't you just swap the speedo unit from one set of clocks to the other? Straightforward (unclip plastic front and undo the four bolts) and you'll retain the correct mileage without messing around?

its a bit like a rubik´s cube - start at one end, and work your way up - if I remember correctly, you have to fiddle a bit with the small metal noses. I did it several times before, but its almost impossible to discribe without having one in hands.

thanks but the line

"rewinding big counter back to 6 zeros took me few weeks" kinda puts me off a little, it's not so important to take a few weeks!

I'll try and trip the digits down if i get a chance,

Weeks? It'll take about 5-10 minutes to do Phil from start to finish to whatever mileage you want - it really is very easy to do once you've worked out how to do it.

It's difficult to explain in words the process, and to be honest, I'm not entirely happy writing the process up on a public website anyway - after all, there's enough clocked 205's out there as it is and I'd personally rather not further that particular con by telling the world how. Needless to say, once you realise how easy it is, you'll never trust the mileage of any 205 unless it's got a mountain of paperwork to back it up... I cringe everytime I see people paying a massive premium for "low mileage 205's" on eBay when, surprise surprise, there's little in the way of history/paperwork :)

I'll drop you a PM in a few minutes with an outline of how to do it. Otherwise, if you're really stuck, I'll do one of my spare sets of clocks for you and pop it in the post.

Even if they were impossible to adjust its so easy to swap the entire clocks mileage would still have to be considered suspect IMO.
