UPDATE:

Engine out and on its way back to Mass as we speak for the oil leak to be checked over, block threads for the sump taken out to M8 and the Dry Sump Pan & Pump fitted up. Block will then be pressure tested to ensure it is leak free.

Also contact Maniflow this morning to order my new 4:2:1 Large Bore (41mm) Primaries Manifold with no flex and a 2 1/2" exit pipe. According to Mass this will release power all through my rev range so when i do get it on the Rolling Road for the final ECU tune up i will be very interested to see the final power output. With its 4:2:1 design and larger primaries to suit the head i should see higher a torques figure.

Car has also been throroughly looked over by the scruiteneers and all complies and has passed with flying colours, what a releif for a self built car :D

Also will be fitting my GoPro video camera mount to the car tonight so look out for some good footage when i finally get racing.

Simon

Started looking into pre fitting the 8.25" 7ltr Dry Sump Tank in the engine bay and much to my dismay it just isnt going to fit

The diameter is not the problem, its the height of the damn thing at 16" + 1.5", top of the gearbox to the bottom of my strut brace which sits against the underside of the bonnet will only fit about 13-14" max.

My options are to fit the tank in the passenger footwell as close up against the inside of the bulkhead as possible

OR

Get a smaller tank, Forge Motorsport do a 6.3ltr which measures D7.5" x H12" which i think should just fit above the gearbox

Im really not sure which is best to be honest, the PACE tank is better for the fact that it breaks in half for easy cleaning and holds more oil plus running the pipes through the bulkhead isnt a problem as ill just drill a couple of holes big enough and put rubber gromets to save the hoses being chaffed, i dont agree with fixing Aeroquip fittings to the bulkhead and then fitting the hose to each end of this because the less fittings the better in my opinion. I will have to contact my scruiteneers to check if they'll have an issue with the tank being in this position.

Opinions..........??

Regards

Simon

Definitely get in touch with the scrutrineers about this.

I was talking to one recently about putting stuff in the passenger foot well and he did say it is ok to a point but it cannot be allowed to encroach on the ability of the marshals to extract a driver in an emergancy so a tall tank (which will have to be boxed in as well) is going to take up a lot of space.

Do you really need to have 7l of oil on board when the standard volume is about 5l? I'd have thought with a dry sump you'd need less oil, not more! :o

granted they are air/oil cooled, but the Beetles my friends race carry ten litres over the standard 2.5!

Ignore that Forge Motorsport tank i spoke about, the website states 1.4 gallons which is 6.3ltrs but the dimensions are equivalent to PACE's 5 ltr tank so it must be US Gallons which comes in at 5.2ltrs.

Looks like to get the volume its going to have to situated inside the bulkhead and boxed in, what a ball ache!! <_<

I'd have a word with Pace and see what they recommend! I mean it's an 8v on solid lifters, the oil consumption can't be high enough to warrant having 7l of oil in it, surely? And that's just in the tank, you must have about another litre in the plumbing and oil cooler too? I dunno.. I have zero experience with dry sumps but it just surprises me you need so much!

Just had a word with Mass and they said that 7ltr is more of a Safety Overkill to be honest so you can fill the tank to a little less than 7ltrs so to avoid over filling the tank and it spewing out into your catch tank in tight turns etc. They said the rated volume capacity given for a tank will be to the bottom of the top baffle in the tank not to the very brim of the tank which was news to me. They reckon i should get away with a 5ltr tank as the hoses alone will hold another 1/2 ltr ish plus the 2 return scavenges draw 150% of the pumps draw capability from the oil tank so as soon as it hits the sump pans its sucked back up to the tank.

Sounds like im tryin to convince myself here!!!

5l sounds more like it to me! Your 8.25" x 16" tank is 14 litres in volume, so the fill point it roughly half way up. :)

5.5l total volume sounds much more like it.

Spoke to PACE this morning and they strongly recommend the 7ltr tank so im going with the experts advice unfortunately adding myself more work in fitting the tank against the interior bulkhead and boxing it in against the bulkhead.

Will have a go tonight with my dummy oil tank i made and see how it looks/fits!!

When you look inside the pace tank its a lot more involved than just splitting in half the baffles are much better than the forge type tanks.

Iv been talking with mark and he's told me exactly the same a 8.25 * 16" tank min so looks like some cutting might be needed to get in the engine bay then!

Can you not sit the tank on a slight angle to get it to clear the bonnet?

Have you thought about adding 'wings' to a smaller tank to give you back the lost capacity - if height is the issue, spread out into the available space you do have. Might not look fantastic, but function over form and all that

Seems like the design inside the pace tanks is quite unique and so I would want to start playin around with that, it's seems they have gone to alot of trouble to separate the air from the oil as it's scavenged back into the tank.

The tank needs to be no less than 2" shorter to have any chance of fitting in the bay as it will sit ontop of the long gear selector bar and the breather pipes will touch the underside of the bonnet AND more so will not fit with any sort of strut brace fitted.

I will post some pics I have taken it a bit

Sorry guys it's passenger footwell I'm afraid, have also taken some pics of this and think it's fits quite well just a bit of a faff to build an enclosure around it!

Pics as promised, firstly you can see how its just too tall for the engine bay:

Looks like it was meant to fit inside the car, shame you have to box it in though.

In front of the gearbox tilted back?

Yeh it fits perfectly under the large hole where old interior fan used to sit and it is a crying shame it needs to be enclosed and will be a proper faff to build an enclosure which butts up to the bilkhead either side of the tank seeing as the bulkhead has so many different curves and contours, lookin neat and tidy is top of my list with it being secure!!

It can only down behind the gearbox if anywhere above the linkages and would need a serious tilt to fit under the strut brace, would be very suprised if you could run the system with the tank on a tilt too!?!?
