Gearbox Ratios

im after the ratios for the 1.6 & 1.9 gearboxes,

i know everyone fits the 1.6 as the acceleration is better, im guessing that this is because the 2nd gear is best?

personally im after amore middle top engine box of the 1.9 im getting as the tracks i use (castle coombe/goodwood/nurburgring) are all faster tracks so not many 2 gear corners.

use google "be3 gear ratios", taylor-eng charts the figures.

All the gear speeds are different due to the final drive ratio being longer in the 1.9. The gears themselves are the same apart from 1st, which is longer in the 1.9, meaning there is less of a jump from 1st - 2nd compared with the 1.6.

Unless you need to be doing more than 120 mph then 1.6 will work well. The longer final drive in the 1.9 box will allow higher top speeds (or less noise on motorway) so long as the car has the power to get to that speed.

The accelleration advantage from the 1.6 is a bit missleading really. In reallity it won't give that much of an adavntage on track (prepares to be shot down). For example, sometimes the 1.6 ratios are too short to use 2nd, even in tighter corners so you stay in 3rd for smoothness, as I found at Oulton Park earlier this week. But, ideally, you would have a ratio in between - hence the 2nd gear with the 1.9 final drive might have been perfect for exitting the tighter corners. Overall, the accelleration from rest will be better with 1.6 final drive but not much different in normal driving -the gear you choose for a corner might be different though.

Most late 1.6 and 1.9 box's use all the same gears so it's not always correct saying that the 1.6 has a different 1st gear.

Oh, never heard that before! Good info, Cheers. Do you know serial numbers, registrations etc, is there a production cut-off?
