What's The Difference Between An 89 Car And A 92 Car?

Recommended Posts

MrG

I have a 91 car in bits, and I am also after a fun type hack, now my thoughts are buy a cheap 205 GTI to use daily AND use as a template to rebuild my 91 car. So was there any major differences in for eg the wiring of the cars.

Thanks

Wiring seems to change from month to month on these, let alone year to year! I can think of at least 2 different ways of connecting the engine loom inside the car for instance, and some don't have the brown multiplug in the engine bay - thats just off the top of my head with limited experience (between 15 - 20 cars) Rear light loom will obviously be different - but not a problem, Most obvious i suppose is that a '92 may be on the newer (3.1???) injection.

hmm in that case I should try and secure a 91 car then to try and keep them the same. Its the wiring that has me a little stumped, what goes where and what plugs into what as it seems I have a group of connections underneath the heater/behind the centre console area that has me stumped. let alone all the brown multi plugs etc.

Sounds a bit extravagant, buying another car just to help with wiring! Most of the plugs will only fit in one place, otherwise you can look at the numbers on the wires and then use the wiring diagram in the Haynes manual to sort out what is what.

I agree extravagant it is, but I look at a wiring diagram and I cannot figure out what its actually saying to me.

I will look again and note the wiring numbers, but if I got another then it would serve two purposes, one as a template to figure out the wiring etc on this 91 car, and two I would use it daily as I am car less at the moment (apart from our Panda 100).

For eg, there are a few yellow blocks that I presume are earthing plugs that plug into a singular earthing block mounted to the body, and what are these individual connectors under the heater etc, I'm not sure what I'm looking at regards the wiring diagrams.

Take some pics. I'm sure you'd get all the answers you need :D Of course if you really want another '91 car.............

LOL maybe I do!

A few pictures follow as I am a little stumped, however the wiring isn't al complete as you can see, so have I got the looms fitted wrongly and therefore unable to connect to the right connections? However I will be back up there this week to look at the numbers on the blocks etc to see if I can marry any up?

So you have the dash instrument loom in, but nothing to the hazards / clock, hrw and rear fog switch?. (looks to be the same loom set up that Smokey is struggling with). Would I be going out on a limb to suggest the yellow and brown plugs terminate at the instruments? if so, I would say they are incorrectly routed and should go behind the heater box to the fuse box. If I were in your position, I would plug as much as poss into the fuse box ( plugs should be colour coded with blobs on fusebox) and see what I'm left with! Do you also have c/l and e/w to contend with? Do you have the plugs in place to the wiper / indicator stalks?

cheers Steve.

I'm not 100% sure on what terminates where on this. I have the wiring to the dash OK and all in situ, plugs fitted to the indies wipers and headlamps ok, the switches in the centre and the supply to the clock etc is hanging but there, these plugs are under the heater assembly and come through the bulkhead? Now I will plug the ones loose into the fuse box and I'll do this late Monday. I wasn't aware there was coloured notes to show what goes where so this will definitely help.

Anyhow this car has the lot, c/l, windows, abs and pas. so loads to contend with. Out of my depth really where wires are concerned.

Anyhow that is a pointer so many thanks.

Wow! with all those extras you'll struggle to find one for a pattern!

I also think that I may have the location/insert points through the bulkhead of 2 looms incorrect hence the odd location/spacing and the question asked, so Weds I'll move them about as I'm sure this will solve my problem?

solved it to a degree I think, the looms were in the wrong points through the bulkhead so now I've managed to locate the correct locations for the plugs in the fuse board, I have 2 maybe 3 locations empty though and the odd plug going free but have yet to start putting the dash back together so hopefully they will find their place.

There may well be more wires / plugs than you need in the loom, I've found. I wouldn't worry about the odd plug not finding a home until something fails to function

The 1991 looms vary a lot as I have found out. Some have door looms that split at the bottom of the A Pillar, some do not. If they do split, then there are looms for central locking and central locking with PLIP (Remote). The latter as a funny black control box to the left of the steering column and a drivers door actuator with a three pin connector as opposed to 2.

Why does it have a Be1 gear lever?

has it? whats the difference?

the big problem with this is I don't know where certain items are fitted. For eg I have a brown plug by the RH of the dash, numerous plugs with no female sections to connect into although it does have what I believe is a plip and central locking etc.

I am also slightly bemused by the abs as I can't see where a run of brake pipe goes from and to? Still I'm not reliant on fixing it all so it'll take as long as it takes.

Lift up reverse collar on the Be1 lever. Be3 as that car should have is in the '6th' position below 5th. depends what gearbox and clutch pedal it has too!
