Mi16 On Unleaded

Recommended Posts

sport1901966

Whilst using the haynes to time up my mi at the weekend i saw it mentions having to change the timing by 3 degrees if the engine is to be run on unleaded. I just wondered if anybody had more info on this?

Thanks,

Geoff

You ought to clarify Geoff the details of your car/engine.

A typical Mi engine cannot be timed, so I am assuming you have one of those 8v distributor adaptors?

Mi ECUs are usually mod'd to unleaded by way of a resistor (an OE one not one of those eBay thingies).

You cant change the ignition timing on standard Mi16 engine management, hence why they are reccomended to run on super unleaded. If you have a later 3 row ECU the engine will have a knock sensor and will retard the timing somewhat on its own, although only once the pre-ignition starts!

Id just run it on Optimax anyway, i always found mine gave better fuel mileage on this than normal unleaded, and it ran sweeter.

Its running the motronic 1.3 ecu. I didn't think it was possible to time manually which is where my question comes from. Basically is it something i need to do anything about. I assume it needs advancing due to pre ignition issues with unleaded, does that mean it should be run on higher octane unleaded?

Thanka for looking

IIRC 1.3 is 3-row anyway so thats a good start. As i said before the reccomended fuel type for Mi16s is Super Unleaded, so yes it would be better to run it on that.

Sorry the 1.3 was a complete lie i meant 4.1 so a 2 row :o. But certainly super unleaded it is!
