Wants To Stall When Moving Off

Recommended Posts

pablo

On my pug when I go to move off, or even just quickly jab the throttle the car wants to die on me. Anyone else had a similar problem?

its fine otherwise.

there is an idle control valve which I can feel vibrating with the ign on but not started so I guess its doing something.

any help appreciated!

Do you have the speedo sender connected up?

Not really :(

The 205 speedo is cable operated but the donor car your engine came from used an electronic speedo, to make it work properly in a 205 you need to use a hybrid sender in the gearbox that outputs an electrical signal (that the ECU needs to see) and also lets you fit a cable so the speedo works. If your speedo is just directly connected to the gearbox with no output to the ECU then that may well be the cause of the symptom you described.

blimey sounds complicated, never heard of that before.

Its using a regular BE3 box what should I be looking for?

Look where the speedo cable goes into the gearbox, there should be an electrical connector right next to it, if there isn't you need to get the correct sender.

on a related note, the sender on top of the box at the front (grey in colour): whats it for? reverse switch?

Checked this eve and the cable comes out of the box just over the drivers side driveshaft. No electrical connection just a cable.

would this really cause a problem tho? I get the same symptom if I jab the throttle quickly at standstill.

Mine used to do that when I first completed the installation, you need to check all your boost/vacuum lines for any leaks.

What caused mine in the end after hours of searching was that I had a line going to the boost gauge but it wasn't solid it was a cheap thing that was quite flexible, and it was of too large a bore. When I changed this for a very small bore solid vaccum line it became so much more responsive. All I can think is that the larger tube 'stored' a certain amount of air and was giving false readings to the MAP sensor.

Also the plastic fitting which goes into the map sensor in the ecu was cracked so I mended that in case of any leaks and that helped aswell.

All it takes is a little leak from somewhere and as I am sure you will know there are lots possible places for these on this engine!!

yes indeed mate Ill redo the pipe to the ECU as all the others have been done already.

Id still be interested to know the effect of not having the vss sensor connected to the ecu

Mine never ran any differently with it connected or disconnected.

Supposedly some people say it lets the engine overboost to 0.7 bar in the higher gears but mine never did that regardless of the sensor.

Im running a boost controller anyway and it runs to a bar in all gears so think Ill leave it off. If it aint broke....

Ill check the ecu connection tho. I think the seal on my servo is kaput as its hissing on idle but stops when I press the brake. Only fitted the servo a fortnight ago tho so its not the cause of the stall thing.

Does it ever stop?

I never noticed different levels of boost with the VSS disconnected but mine would hesitate at low revs while pulling away and fuel economy was much worse.

Do you have many 306s in scrapyards near you? That is your best bet if you do.

Mine hasn't got one connected at all. Does the Motronic 3.2 have an overboost function?
