Xud - Diesel Turbo Help

Recommended Posts

SmokyDiesel

How do folks,

I'm trying to help a friend identify the problem with his old Rover 218 SD (M reg) - it's fitted with the Pug XUD Turbo Diesel the same as in my 205 (except he has a flash intercooler!)

The car hasn't been used much recently and has apparently sat idle for the last month or so. The MOT's he got with it suggest it did less than 200 miles last year - so it's been chugging around town I guess.

It's done 130,000 miles but it seems extremely sluggish, especially against my 205TD (which has done similar miles).

It's slow to accelerate and, apparently, on the motorway, it would drop speed from 85 down to 75 when in 5th when climbing hills.

We've given it a healthy dose of injector cleaner and will change the fuel filter and oil at the weekend when there's some daylight.

I was expecting it to be at least as quick as the 205 - especially since the 205 isn't intercooled (although the 205 must be lighter). I think we ought to pull the i/c and all piping to flush through too to see if that helps?

Someone mentioned checking the wastegate actuator to see if it's sticking - does that sound possible? If so, does anyone have a pic to show me what we're looking for please?

Any other pointers/advice appreciated.

Thanks

Once you've changed the fuel filter and the oil/filter (might as well do the air filter) too, things could improve alot.

Also check the security and condition of any pipework under the bonnet.

The actuator is a small pipe coming off the Turbo, hiding down the back of the engine, its a solid metal pipe about 7mm thick or so.

Good luck with it.

Does the turbo appear to be providing any boost (notable shove around 2000-2200rpm or so)?

No, nothing like my Pug does. To me it felt almost normally aspirated it was that slow.

No idea what the gearing on Rovers is like - I wouldn't think they were built to have the same "urge" as a 205 DTurbo (different market perhaps?), so don't know if that might have something to do with it.

Not sure even what gearbox they used - I know the gearstick is as floppy as a dead swan's neck though!

Jim - ta for that. I did unclip & check the air filter - it's very clean apart from a dribble of oil from the EGR (I think) pipes.

My stepdad used to have a 218d non turbo and was so slow it was hopeless. It sounds like the turbo aint working properly.Maybe undo turbo pipe going to turbo

and make sure the turbo vanes can spin by hand if not the turbo seized. My local diesel specialist also recommends when engine running and revved up

he puts his finger in and makes sure the turbo is spinning, i know it sounds stupid but he did it other day for us on a renault kangoo.

wouldnt recommend putting your fingure in could upset the balance of the vanes

didnt know this was the same engine, sounds like a good upgrade for a 205 with the intercooler what sort of bhp should a good engine have?

I "think" the Rover should have 88bhp - woo!

Mind you, doesn't the Pug DT only have 78bhp?

Hmm - 10hp from an i/c (and it's not a big i/c on the Rover either).

I think it's turbo off time at the weekend when we can see what we're doing - anyone recommend a place for gaskets etc.? I do have both GSF and ECP locally in Reading.

Looking at the car last night I think it has the KKK (K14?) turbo - so no external wastegate actuator arm to fiddle with - damn!

no external arm to fiddle with, just an 8mm locknut on a threaded rod, far easier than the Garrett

LOL.

So, how do I tell if the wastegate is knackered? For example, should the threaded rod move easily if pulled/pushed?

Apologies for the numpty questions - I've never fiddled with a turbo before; the one on my Pug just seems to work so is left alone (fingers crossed!!)

I presume there's some sort of diaphragm inside the wastegate that reacts to vacuum (bit like the auto advance on my Mini's distributor) - if so, do these split and can they be fixed, or is it an exchange for rebuilt turbo time (probably cost more than the car!)?

Questions questions - spanners at the weekend time I think. I bet it's a right sod to get off - I did have thoughts of swapping the one off my Pug to see how it goes but don't want to run the risk of leaving two cars down. I expect the fittings are nicely corroded on a 93 Pug and 95 Rover!

We have boost!

There's a small hose from underneath the engine-top air box down to the back of the fuel pump. This wasn't connected - it connects to the intercooler pipework so the pump can sense when the turbo is on boost. Fitted it back on and now the slug is gone!

time to fit it in the pug then?

LOL - nice idea!

The setup on the Rover is different from the Pug though. For example, the starter motor sticks out to the right from on top of the clutch housing, instead of being on the front of the engine like in the Pug. I think they had a bit more room in the Rover engine bay.

Not sure what gearbox the Rover uses either - someone's suggested it's a Honda one (PG1 IIRC)!

honda gearbox will it fit my 205????

you say its the same block so maybe it will fit,and might have some nice ratios for road/ track

does it use rods to change gears or cables?

or maybe swop the intercooler for performance upgrade?
