Water Leak From Inlet?

Recommended Posts

Guest matarmitage88

Hi All,

I am new to this site and the world of 205's, thoroughly enjoying my new purchase though.

I have a problem though which I am hoping someone can help me with.

I have a water leak, it seems to be coming from the joint where the inlet is connected to the head?? it is the right inlet. is this common? is it just the gasket which would need replacing, if so how easy is the job on a scale of 1-10 and where can I get the part?

Thank you in advance for any advise.

I have photos but it will not allow me to put a photo on here

Cheers

Mat

I wouldn't say this is really common, but I have seen it before. There is an un-used waterway that stops at the head face. To sort it you just need to change the inlet gaskets. In itself this isn't that hard, the only possibly awkward bit, is if you car still has the bracket from the inlet down to the starter, this is awkward to get at.

Gaskets you can either get from the main dealer, or see if a motor factor can sell you them individually. However most factors will usually only sell you a full head set with head gasket etc etc included.

The only thing to be careful of, is that you get the correct GTI gasket. The carburettor 1.6 205 engines use a slightly different gasket which will block the injectors off on the GTI head. Just compare the old to the new carefully. You also need to be careful to clean off all the old gasket material, but make sure you do not get any down the ports into the engine.

When I built my engine I actually blocked these waterways off, but you don't need to do this really.

i think i may have the same problem, there seems to be steam rising from where the inlet meets the head occasionally??

i have only had the car a week and brought it with a new chrome inlet manifold fitted to it, how would i go about finding out if that is the problem or if it's more serious?
