Tell Me About Fuel Pumps Failing

Recommended Posts

Simes

Just trying to suss a few things out

Car not used for 2 or 3 weeks.

Go to start up

Takes ages to catch - 10 seconds perhaps

Runs lumpy for a minute or so.

This was the case even with warmer weather.

This is how I've used the car for years and It's always caught first time.

All ignition components new so I want to know what the signs are of a failing fuel pump.

.. prise off the fuel pump relay cover and close the contacts manually with your fingers and hold it like this for a few seconds in order to build up the pressure .. then try starting , if it starts without delay afterwards could be leaky fuel pump non return valve

Damir

EDIT : anyway , i've had very similar problem just few weeks ago , since it started to be colder outside , let the car standing for 24h or few days and it took a fair bit of crank until it eventually starts .. was thinking that it's a fuel pump as well , but no , it was the ignition amp ... as it was last winter as well , identical problem after the summer time and sorted again in the same way by replacing the ignition amp... (though , i have Magneti Marelli amp which works fine during the most time of the year bar the winter , when it refuses to saturate the coil sufficiently in cold weather after long standing in order to produce strong spark to fire up the cold engine .. thus i'm switching for a Bosch amp for winter time )
