Setting Ignition Timing With Strobe

Recommended Posts

treesimon

Alittle while ago i sent a distributor of to H&H ignition solutions to get refurbed. Once i got it back i fitted it,and used a gunson advance timing light. Set the idle speed to 700rpm and set the strobe to 5degree BTDC. Vacuum advance disconnected.

I wrongly attached the inductive pick up to the 4th cylinder (cam pulley) rather than no1 cylinder then set the dizzy.

Later on i knew it was wrong. So started over again fitted to no1 lead. Resetting the dizzy i only had to move it roughly 2degrees retarded.

Looking at my spare engine in the garage i could see that piston no1 and no 4 are both at the TDC but no1 was on it firing stroke and no4 was on its exhaust stroke.

What i cannot understand is why i only had to retard the dizzy by only 2degree , surely i should have had to have moved it more.

Have i messed up?

No you haven't. With your timing mark being on the crankshaft, the crankshaft will always rotate twice to the rotation of the camshaft/dizzy. So the crankshaft will be in the same position at 0 degrees on the camshaft and at 180 degrees on the camshaft, so really it doesn't matter if you have put the strobe light pickup on 1 or 4 cylinder.

Makes sense as its 2:1 ratio. Just wanted to make sure i had done anything wrong.

Cheers

Have you felt any tangible benefit with the new dizzy setup?

Its hard to say to be honest, on the old unit the vacuum advance was u/s. The new gives more mpg. how many god knows but a noticeable improvement. The idle improved to, but this could be cause i rest the dizzy with the strobe at the same time.

Only cost £100 from H&H including p&p they replaced vacuum advance. advance springs + posts and fitted a new rotor and cap. They also painted the dizzy.

I felt it was a reasonable price.

Just need to get a recon air flow meter next. Ordering 1 tomorrow.
