Decent Tuning Firms

Recommended Posts

I'm on the look out for a decent rollong road in the Manchester area. Would like to see how she ran and i feel it could also do with a bit of a tuning because it smells a little rich at the moment. Any help and guidance is appreciated.

I can't say I've used them for RR but Automech in Irlam may be worth a look.

They run their own racing team running XR3's and I have used them for bits and pieces and they have always been good, but as I say i've not used their RR so not sure what they are like.

Looks like they in the process of updating their website as well.

I can't recommend a firm, although I would advise you go to somewhere that knows the type of ECU you run, which you haven't made clear.

For you to have 180bhp (as per your sig) I'm guessing you may have an aftermarket ECU or a standard (perhaps 3-row Motronic) ECU.

If you have a standard ECU then I'm not quite sure what type of tuning you expect, as there are very few people I've ever heard of other than Wayne at Chip Wizards who can do anything with the ECU itself, and there's nothing really adjustable on the Mi engine.

The only things that would make you down on power if you are running a bit rich, are things like changing the ECU water temp sender (a ~£30 replacement part), having the injectors cleaned (~£50 - but that wouldn't cause rich running) or having the AFM serviced/retracked.

Even with an aftermarket ECU, those items will all need to be running well anyway.

And I wouldn't take it to any rolling road/tuner unless I knew everything was 'tip top' before going anyway, which includes a clean air filter, decent oil, oil and fuel filter fitted.

I've been to a RR day at a place called WGT in Middlewich, the operator seemed pretty clued up, they mainly work on RX7's etc but if you are just after a setup its probably worth a phone call. Whilst we were there they had an Emerald and a DTA plugged in so probably ECU type isn't too much of a problem.

Yeah its running the standard 3-row Motronic unit from the Mi16. I know the car has uprated cams (Kent items) and a shortend inlet manifold. The filters are all clean and oil has been changed within the last three months. The car also has an uprated exhaust manifold and a mongoose back box, so it wider than the standard pug system.

Thanks.

Theres 'Mikeanics' in Congleton, which is down the A34 from your end. Ive not used him personally but have had several recommendations, and he runs a 205GTi :D

Ah, OK. Well in that case it doesn't really sound like tuning, as there's not much to tune.

More like eeking out any things not making it run as efficiently as it can and getting a power run. Compression test would be a good idea too.

Good luck with it all. Hope you'll post what you find out and what results you get.

I'm running identical set up - Mi16, pair of 262's and Motronic M1.3.

My emissions always have been bad on idle, combination of worn AFM and TB butterflies.

I'm forking out for an Emerald - should make the rest work nicely.

Only taken 5 years toget round to it!
