Track Tyres For Wet

Recommended Posts

skinner2k3

I know this has sort of been covered before, I have searched and spent the last half hour reading through posts.....

I might be doing a track day at combe in late november, I am assuming it will be lashing it down.

Having driven a track session at combe in the wet on worn Yoko A539s I can honestly say I would rather drive on bare rims!

I have Falken Ziex 912 on the focus and they have impressed me in the wet particularly under breaking.

So for a track biased car for use in proper wet conditions, ie standing water, what would you track guys recommend?

Budget £30-£40 a corner delivered. Been looking at Toyo Proxes T1, Falken 912...... are Uniroyal Rainsport in budget?

Cheers

Ben

What size of tyres are you after, I've assumed 195/15/50? I rate yokohama parada spec 2's on track in wet conditions (£39.95 delivered), or if you can up your budget a bit Hancook RS2's at about £49 delivered.

Dunc.

I've got Paradas on my car, I find them atrocious in the wet.

Yes 195 50 15 I am after.

After the A539 in the wet I would be put off a Yoko road tyre specifically for wet use.

Been looking for the rainsports and I cant seem to find them in 195 50 15???

Price wise I think its between Toyo T1 and Falken 912.

Proxes aren't good in the wet tbh, would avoid.

I find them 'ok' progressive at least, and comparible to how they perform in the dry, unlike Yoko's.

PE2's and F1's are good in the wet, but out of price range probably.

Not sure you can get them in 15" but Yoko 021Rs are awesome in the wet. Used to run them on my rally car on very wet tarmac and/or mud and they stuck like you wouldn't believe possible. Proper competition tyres (though E-marked IIRC), and suitably expensive.

I used to like the old Gsd2 F1's in the wet. That said that was never on track.

AO21's are available in 185 60 14, fairly sure 15" would be available.

BFG's are good I've found, cheaper than Michelin (though are made by them) but obviously don't last half as long.

The best tyres I've used in the wet are also Goodyear Eagle F1's. However I know people also rate the Michelins, I haven't personally tried them.

21's are only available in 13 and 14 inch. Also have a small production run so can sometimes be hard to get hold of.

Agree, paradas are awful in the wet! I have a set I use for DRY trackday's in which they are pretty decent.

In the wet I would rather have kwick-fit budget specials.

I quite enjoyed using soft yoko ao48's in the wet round coombe. No problems at all, though the car had a nice neutral setup

Yup, they need a bit of heat in them!

Parada's i'm actually finding more & more uncomfortable for any use, there's so much bloody sidewall flex!

The only wet track day I've ever done I had Potenza's Reo50's, maybe out of your price range though.

I've got a track day booked for Nov 13th and I'm going to get some Rainsports for it. Heard nothing but good reviews about them in the rain. They're about £160 a set off ebay in 195/50-15.

They're OK if you can get some heat in them, but they're so inconsistant to start with it's quite hard.

They're much better when siped, leagues ahead, bu then, no-one would do that would they, because it's illegal, mine are track use only, honest officer.

T1-R's suck in the wet......and in the dry or so i think. I have 912's on my 405 and they're pretty good, they seem to have the same amount of grip in the wet and the dry so you know what you're getting.

When i did that charity day last year i ended up using bald A048's in the damp as they had about 10 times more grip tha the T1-R's (did i mention they're crap in the wet) and had a great day on track

Each to their own with tyres that's the problem with threads like this I suppose. I really was impressed with parada spec 2's, could barely get them to wheel spin even when completely flooring it on a very, very wet knockhill (think I've got a vid of this actually if anyone's interested). Actually just watched the vid and the last two laps were about as wets as it gets and they remained predictable with no aqua planing or wheel spin at all. That was just a standard car though, however impressed more so in the wet than in the dry with the paradas.

It is a very subjective thing though.

Can't think of any better tyre to recommend in the £30 to £40 range.

888's and any other track focused tyre would be good as are the RS2's as I mentioned, all out of the £30-40 bracket though.

Dunc.

Edit - oh also got a pic of me lifting a wheel in the wet on paradas, which takes some grip at least.

I'd give the 912's ago, As said I;ve got them on a couple of car's and find them pretty good, Leaque's above Toyo or Yoko (Road Tyres), I've only used the 912's on a hillclimb but they did well and managed to beat a S2000
