whos found he best price for the rear wheel bearing on the 1.9. i might be in the trade and hence xpected it to be cheap but local factors just came in at around £55,

sounds about right, try GSF or ECP for them, or Motaquip, but most will be around that price as its an integrated bearing, the outer race is machined from the hub itself.

 

 

does confuse me a little that the picture on servicebox for the ZX and Xsara shows a separate bearing but never seen a replacement listed anywhere.

Buypartsby have them for about £48. However obviously there is carriage on top of this. More and more manufacturers seem to be going this way, I know Ford Mondeos also have a throwaway rear hub/bearing assy.
