Webber Diy Air Box + Panel Filter

Recommended Posts

wardy18

I am looking to make an Air Box with a panel filter at the front, i know this has been done already by a forum member as i remember seeing it with a Green Panel filter at the front.

I think this is much better than the Pipercross air box with a cone filter attachment and much cheaper as its a diy job

Who was it that already had this set up???

and

What Panel filter would be best to you, i dont know of any which arnt built to just sit inside a air box, i want one to fix the front of an air box?

Thanks

Simon

You can get large generic flat panel filters. I think I even have the part number for the 306 maxi green cotton filters.

Not everyone will list the competition ones. Drop me a pm and I'll see what part numbers I can find.

Do you have rough dimensions as to what size you require?

havent really measured anything up yet, was just seeing what i could get and then start planning from then, i feel the pipercross socks hold the carbs back and an air box is best suited but not one of those boxes with a conical filter on the side, i wanted a panel filter on the front as i have a massive opening due to a lowered rad

at a guess it would be approx 15 - 20cm high by 40cm ish wide

ITG will make you a panel to your dimensions. This is what we use.

ah yes, that's the one I was referring to at the very start of the thread, you done well looks awesome!

Is that just flat sheets of carbon cut and fitted together to make a square edged box? how did you make the joins/edges if so?

Dan,

Is it this sort of sheet you used clicky or did you lay your own sheeting with resin?

Cheers

Hi

Yeah i used sheets of carbon then used a 3m trade 2 part resin to bond them. I got the carbon from a mate who works in the F1 industry so its only 1.2mm thick but is very stong.

The only problem iv had is as iv got solid engine mounts the high frequency vibrations have started to crack some of the joints so i put a small rubber damper on the front to the bumper this seems to have solved the problem.

I see you have carbs not tb's i was under the impression they dont like the "ram" effect of air being forced in to them?

thanks for the info Dan, the carbs will take in as much air as what is sucked in, ram doesn't have an affect on carbs from what I have been told but I recently run in a sprint and hillclimb in alderney with no socks and she seemed to breath so so good, the socks were restricting so I now want an air box, plenty of open filtered air without the risk of sucking in any foreign bodies

So did you make like a frame for the box and lay the sheets over each edge, or how did you bond the edges together, ie use some sort of 90 deg angled metal strips if you know what I mean??

Cheers John the new 2.2 is a bit better though ;)

Simon

I cut the pannels to the correct sizes then stuck it all together with superglue to hold it wile the resin went off for the joins i used the 3m resin then put another layer of carbon cloth on the inside of the joins with more resin to hold that in place.

This is it all cut out sorry the only pics i have. my advice is to make an exact template out of card it makes it alot easyer to change bits before you sart cutting the carbon i used a small diamond cutter on a dremmel this works a treat but does make lots of bad dust!

Ah ok I see, great thanks for letting me know, definitely goin to have a go at making one as looks awesome and sounds like a perfect solution for me as I have the same open area at the front like you due to lowering my rad so much

Ill let you know how I get on

I'm building a 2.3 for next season but probably won't have the same high spec as yours as I'm staying 8v, can't afford 16v just yet!

Cheers mate
