Recommended Posts

spingit

iv just bought my car and its registered as a 1.6 and says 1.6 on the side, but i am aware it has a 1.9 lump in it, iv no idea what gearbox is in it tho!! all i know is reverse is opposite 5th! would fitting a 1.6 box give me any power increase or faster acceleration? would it be worth doing?

The 1.6 box has a shorter FD ratio yes.

The GTi's have XU series of engines rather than TU's btw. All you need to know will be uncovered using the search function. :D

The only way to really tell that is to remove the diff cover and count the amount of teeth on the crown wheel, or read the number that's embossedon it.

In general, 1.6 box on a 1.9 won't get you to 60mph in second before the rev limiter cuts in. 1.9 box will :D

That blindness can be overcome with practice.

Just look at the rev counter when you are doing 70, make a note of the revs it is doing in 5th and then come back and read the Technical Info on the main site(not the forum) , it gives you the gear ratios for each box.

Simple maths and you have your answer.

Only if you can rely on the rev counter! Although yes, should give a good enouh indication. :)

But what it absolutely will not do, is give you more power. :)
