Problem With Headlights, Possibly Earthing

Recommended Posts

Guest tomwp

Hi,

I have a 205 GTI 1.9, mostly unmodified. I am having a few electrical gremlins, the left front headlight is very dim and the driving lamp on the same side comes on intermittently. The driving lamps also seem to have a life of their own, sometimes they come on when the lights are on dip. It seems as though it is an earthing problem and from the wiring diagrams I see they are all connected to the same earthing point M121A. Does anyone know where I might find this earthing point?

Cheers,

Tom.

Earthing point for the headlights is on the front frame (you'll see yellow block connectors on the frame near the back of the headlights) , though i would recommend one test , take one piece of wire and bridge chassis earth and left (or right i can't remember , anyway it'll be one of the side..) terminal on the headlight bulb and operate the headlights .. if it sorts out afterwards then it is earthing problem ..

Other useful test , in order to see if theres certain voltage loss across the power supply wire because of the wire oxidation , again , take piece of wire , switch on the lights and bridge battery positive terminal with the top headlight bulb terminal -> take look at the illumination intensity when you bridge battery voltage directly on the bulb on and off , if theres noticeable difference id cut off the OE power supply wiring and re-wire the headlights on a two separate relays ..

I've done this on mine and now the headlight intensity is superb :)

Ahh now I know why I couldn't find the earthing point - It was inside an elasticated plastic bag. And indeed underneath 20 years of crud was a yellow connector. It was actually in pretty good condition with just a little oxide layer. After cleaning it up the lights worked. Thank you!

The connectors in the brown plug that goes onto the main lights are getting pretty corroded, does anyone know where I can get the plug assembly from?

Thank you for your help Damir.

You mean the brown multiplug or the tripod connector for the headlight bulbs ? ;)

Most auto electrical suppliers will have the headlight plugs and terminals, but I tend to use

Vehicle Wiring Products

and

AES

(although I've just browsed through the latter and they only seem to supply a complete harness for headlights).
