Hi all,

This is my first post so il just say hi to all!

Forgive me if some has posted about this before but i cant seem to find anything about them.

Im looking to convert to Carbs but i know very little info on them, i have a standard 205 gti 1.9 although the engine has been fully rebuilt and the head skimmed, currently running at 139bhp at the flywheel. (Rolling tested at Skip Brown) and i need a bit of advice on.

A, where is the best/cheapest place to get them?

B, What kind will suit my engine ie, twins, singles, 45's etc, all i really know of them is either twin weber 45's, Dell'orto, Decoes???? :)

Any info would be appreciated

Thanks

Chris

Well, the question is, what do you intend to get back from fitting carbs?

Is it noise? Power? or something else?

I am running bike carbs on an MI16 and I likes them :)

I have a warmed over 1.9 8v and I'm running twin weber 45 dcoes.

as for the best place to buy then I expect it would be best to buy new and have them jetted for your car but cost could be a factor in that. BUT buying used set off say ebay isn't always the best idea but one that's not to be dismissed either. But if you do buy used then factor in buying an overhaul kit for each one and strip them down and clean it all and then carefully put back together. Fairly easy to do this but if they then need additional parts such as linkages etc then it all adds up.

Used, well buy a complete set up including filters/regulator and linkages etc if you can, as for Weber v's Dellorto's well I don't know what is effectively better. I love mine, sounds lovely on full chat. But I bought used and I had to pay out and overhaul them with new parts etc but at least I know exactly how they work and what's been replaced.

the way mine drives is good, not as smooth on normal day to day use as they feel more like a switch, power on, power off etc! But when on track they're fab. Probabley down to the cam etc as well.

I found that you lose tractability low down but at the top end they're doing the business. Where as when compared to Fuel Injection, that's fairly smooth throughout although that can feel restricted at high revs.

Can't say about TB's though.

you'll need an inlet manifold which is here >> ebay inlet

and carbs etc here >>45's new

then you'll need linkages etc which are here >>linkages

so that lot is new and doesn't include filters and regulator etc to reduce the fuel pressure to the carbs. But a used set complete is shown here >>used set of 40's sold but gives an idea.

bales

You have to remember though without other mods such as upping the CR/cams etc...you are going to be shelling out quite a few £££'s purely for a great noise.

They do sound awesome but I wouldn't expect massive gains from them with no other modifications.

Bike carbs are probably a cheaper option if you just want the noise.
