Newbie Q's On S16 Lump & Twin 40's

Recommended Posts

hello a newbie here sorry if these are dumb questions, just bought a 205gti with a s16 lump & twin 40 dellortos on it, previous owner removed injection in favour of carbs, he didnt fit s16 but said it was running ok on standard injection, i no nothing about the history of the carbs but they are a matching pair from a strada 130tc, would u get the carbs checked 1st, refit injection or just try them.

here is a pic of engine bay

45s would better suit a mi16/s16 for top end power. Buy the book how to build and power tune weber and dellorto carburettors, great book by veloce publishing. Injection better for fuel economy, i can get over 25mpg on carbs with an 8valve dizzy on s16 engine. The carbs greatly increase low and mid range torque, come into their own with cams. Just noticed you from burnley, if you get stuck give me a pm. You would be suprised how badly some can be set up with regards jets, ignition and cam timing, throtlte adjustment. When i bought mine it was down on power, the exhaust cam was out a tooth, it was only getting 3/4 throttle and the timing was way advanced, it now feels rapid. ~Gave them a service following the above book. 36 or 38 mm choikes are ideal in twin 45s, mine feels slightly better with 38s without losing bottom end.

You need spark, fuel and compression and should run. Id just check the basics 1st and try and narrow it down to one of these. The fuel will go off if its been stood for a while. If you got fuel pumping and a healthy spark and still no joy, whip out the plugs and check its not flooded. Hope this helps. If you mean its never run on carbs id go back to injection for a road car. You will probably be advised to fit a gti6 intake manifold, all i know is my 306 s16 had a lot more low down pull than my current 306 gti6 due to the s16 acav intake manifold. When i removed the s16 cat it killed the low and mid range torque. So imo if a road car, id go for injection and s16 manifold and a cat.
