Revs Rising Out Of Control

So tonight my Mi has developed a worrying habit upon start up.

The revs will rise and rise until i cut the engine.

First it happened after filling up with fuel, so the car was upto running temp. And the second time it happened the car had been sat for over an hour.

 

If i put it in gear the car will accelarate away itself. But as soon as i manage to get it on the open road get into 2nd etc, she will go back to normal (revs drop)

 

I had this happen a few times in the summer when the car was very hot and i was restarting her, but now its happening when she is barley warm..

 

Im dreading starting the car tommoro at 6.30am.. May wake some of the neighbours.

 

Im thinking it may be the coolant temp sensor..

 

Has anyone had this problem before?! Suggestions?

Sticking throttle body, air leak, number of things really.

Dont think its an air leak. As it all settles down once i get going down the road..

Sticking TB sounds highly possible.

Get the inlet pipe off and work the throttle to have a look, sounds like a fairly major sticking throttle if you can actually make the car pull away on it.

Idle valve sticking wide open possibly if its not an air leak or stuck throttle, how high do the revs actually get?

Well ive been cutting the engine at about 4K. I get the impression it would keep rising to the limiter.
