Fitting 1.9calipers To A Standard 1.6

Recommended Posts

si_03

i am thinking correct that the standard 1.6 calipers can be swapped directly with the 1.9 calipers and using the origanal 1.6 disks. is there anything else i need to do or not

cheers si

I can't answer that specific question, but...

What wheels are you using? Sometimes 1.6 pepper pot alloys don't fit over 1.9 calipers.

I'm thinking of this myself having more than likely just knackered one of my 1.6 calipers.

So you just get the 1.9 calipers, carriers and bolts and your set? It doesn't matter if your 1.6 had Bendix Girling whatever?

Is there only one type of 1.9 caliper?

What about the different disc offsets? That doesn't affect anything??

Oh yeah, I have the 1.6 Goodridge braided hoses. Are they the same as the 1.9 set at the front?

As the thread says 1.9 calipers complete with pads carriers and bolts. I fitted them on my 1.6 c/w 1.6 goodrich hoses and 14" pepperpots no problems, got the bolts off a 306 i think from the scrappys

Imho it's easier to change the disks rather than the carriers.

Get 1.9 calipers, bolts and disks.

ARGH NOOOOOO!!!!!

This is totally wrong.

To upgrade to 1.9 brakes on a 1.6 gti you need...

1.9 calipers (and pads :) ), 1.9 bolts and you retain the standard sized 1.6 discs.

This has been discussed many times, maybe we need a sticky??

Your braided hoses will be fine for either 1.6 or 1.9 calipers.

Yes you retain the 1.6 discs, otherwise they'll be the wrong offset for the calipers, as you're still running the 1.6 hubs, whih determines where the calipers sit over the disc!

Ah, sorry for the confusion. The previous owner of my car had 1.9 disks with 1.6 calipers and i remember i couldn't fit new pads because of the wrong offset. Then I got 1.9 calipers and 1.6 disks for the 1.6 hubs.

Sorry again for the confusion.

Just to add to this thread becuase i've been doing the same conversion.

Although i decided to use 1.9 disks and got 1.9 hubs to do that.

The question i've got is did the 1.6 have brake sensor wires?

Its just my 1.9 pads have the sensor wire but i don't remember unplugging my old 1.6 brakes from any wires.

This is on a CTI btw

Thanks
