Help! 1.9 Box Wont Engage Gear

Recommended Posts

mikebullock84

hello im in the last stages of getting my dimma on the road, the engines in, bodywork resprayed, new beam etc just one major thing to do, the gearbox! It wont engage gear unless the lift up reverse is used, then it will happily drive in all gears, including reverse. So the box must be ok, just the linkage. Ive checked alll the rods and just dont get it!

Ive driven the car up the road, it does seem lower geared, and as i bought the car as a non runner i dont know what the problems were with the box before hand. Maybe its had the 1.6 box fitted and something isnt right? Maybe the where the linkage rods connect to are bent? i dunno what to look at next.

Hopefully i maybe be able to borrow a another 1.9 car thats off the road this week, and i can basically study both cars to see whats wrong. So anyone got any ideas on whats up?

cheers, once this is sorted she can got for her first MOT in 4years!

i believe its a BE3, reverse is based bottom right, below 5th, isnt the be1 has the reverse up the top left?

yeah you're right there, BE3 doesn't use the cable so you need to remove it as it causes the problem you're experiencing :)

really, so its just the case of removing all the cable lift up thing, and i should be sorted? hope so, il try that tomorrow night. So what prevents me from engageing reverse gear by accident from 5th that lives above it?

i managed to get out to my workshop tonight, your suggestion of removing the lift up cable is worng im afraid. With the cable detached from the gearstick only 3rd gear is avaible.

If you can't get fifth or reverse & you've had the gearbox apart it does sound possible that you've managed to put the selector arm in the wrong position so its not finding all the gears imo.

yeah the box was off about a year ago during the rebuild, i cant remember what i have done, but guess il have to take the box off and go through things again. what you suggested graham does some about right, unfortunatley its no the quickest fix!

If it is what I suggested, it is possible to fix it & have it all back together in a couple of hours imo.

You only need to take the diff & speedo housing drive off to feel if its right & then if its not drive the pins out & reposition the shaft inside.

Refit the pin & see if you can get all the gears, if so job done & refit the diff etc.

Graham.
