Questions About Powder Coating

Recommended Posts

Atari Boy

Apologies about the daft questions, I just need to understand a few things better.

I am about to get a set of 1.9 alloys powder coated, I also have some used centre caps (thanks Silky) that I want to be finished in the same colour (OE silver).

Could someone help on the following areas please:

1. Do powder coating companies have half a dozen shades of each colour (like silver) of is there just one red, one blue etc?

2. Would they paint my plastic centre caps at the same time in the same colour?

3. What silver should I be looking for to get a good match to the OE colour of the 1.9 Speedlines?

Many thanks

Jonny

I can't imagine they'll be able to powder coat the centre caps if they're plastic. They'll surely need spraying to match?

With powder coating it's an electrical process IIRC and then the coating is baked on. Not a good process for plastic I'm guessing. ;)

Most places will offer various choices of colour to coat - whether this matches standard colour and whatever paitn you can get for centre caps is pot luck.

Would myself rather choose a wheel colour that can match on caps that stick to original colour.

Bear in mind that Italian Speedlines vx French SMRs vs Belgians vs Spanish versions are all slightly different to each other and even the same type can be different alloy to alloy.

Add on to that 15 years of yellowing to lacquer, many refurbs in different shades etc. I can't see that it matters.

Even I realised that the caps would not be put in the oven Rich.

Good point about the differnt number of silvers, I will go for one that I can match the sprayed centre caps to match.

I can offer you a couple of option's, I can either get your wheels done or give you a name of a local company to you, But thru me it will be slightly cheaper.
