Mi16 Gearbox On 306 Hdi?

Recommended Posts

Will a 405 mi16 BE3 gearbox fit a 306 HDi? My 306 gearbox sounds like its on its last legs.

I thought (hoped?!) it was a driveshaft or the intermediate bearing at first but I've changed the o/s driveshaft twice and it didn't help. N/S one is fairly new and seems OK. That was probably wishful thinking as it sounds far worse than a driveshaft now but was worth a try. The noise and vibration are consistent with road speed in any gear so I reckon the diff might be knackered? . I think the box may have been low on oil.

I've got a spare 405 Mi16 box in the garage and would like to try this just to make sure it's the gearbox causing the problem.

They look interchangeable as both BE3, similar clutch control arm and linkage connections, etc. Only difference I see is the speedo connection but looks like this could be swapped easily.

Guess the ratios will be far from ideal but if it fits, cures the problem and gets me to work, that would be good until I get another more suitable box.

Thanks.

I think it'll fit onto the engine but depending on the age of the 405 the clutch mechanism might be wrong (pull instead of push or viceversa).

I don't think the lower gears will be much good but fourth 7 fifth should mean the car is still usable.

Check the gear change selector arms on the box are the same, if not you might want to look at swapping them, if you have to swap them be careful because you can lose some gears if the spindle drops out of place inside the box but thast recoverable by removing the diff.

Thanks Graham. I just had a look and one of the selector arms is different. The 405 box has a sort of shaft type where the 306 is a ball type like the 205. I'll be careful swapping them.

Got the 306 box off today and both clutch mechanisms are the same.

Thanks.
