Gti6 Oil Temp

Recommended Posts

2052006

Noticed my oil temp go rather high on track yesterday.

Now, I still have the original gti6 sensor in the sump and know I should be using a late 205 sensor to get a more accurate reading.

However, I've also read that with the gti6 sensor, the gauge will read low. But, it still went up to the fifth line :( . Normally, it won't go over the second line, ever.

So, was my oil getting dangerously hot and does this indicate I should be fitting a proper air-oil cooler what ever sensor I use?

P.S. I have removed the original heat exchager unit - so that won't be heating the oil - as I understood this to be best if I went on track.

Isnt the heat exchanger an oil cooler?

It's more of a regualtor than a heater or cooler, keeps the oil close to water temp which is good, if you had it on still you may have noticed your coolant temps climb too.

It's hard to have a car that has the oil warm enough on the road but then cool enough on track, I'd add an air cooler but remove it when not in track use (or cardboard over the front (and have the water job on for the road)

Yes, but as I understood it (er, maybe incorrectly), it would be fine for road use and helps heat up the oil from cold, but then would not get rid of the heat from the oil when used hard on track and would actually contribute to high oil temps.

I know the gauges aren't the most accurate, but is the change I saw normal ie. from 1st/2nd line to 5th line? And is this too high?

The heat exchanger does just what is says, The water heats the oil up quicker to obtain normal engine running temps quicker to make a efficent engine, But when pushed both heat each other up, I know on my old 6 it took me under 10 mins to get the temps almost off the guage.

Is it really necessary to use the original 205 sensor? Is an adapter required or is it a straight fit.

The temp guages are fairly inaccurate as standard but to go up from the 2nd bar up to the fifth would indicate the oil is hotter than it should be. I think most people that use the gti6 on track use an oil cooler to keep the temps down.

No, the sensor's a straight fit - though you have to adapt the original '6 wiring connector.

If I fit an air cooler, is using cardboard or something to wrap it safe?

Foil is the usual method

Spiky

going to 3/4's on the gauge will in most case be fine

though ideally you need a accurat gauge, i have a spa and most i have ever seen on track is 117
