Which Manual Will I Need?

Recommended Posts

dk73

Hi people,

Thinking about doing the head gasket myself and gaining some experience.

So im about to buy a manual from halfords,

The problem is which one?

Service and repair or the other one?

Please get back to me.

Regards dk73.

The other one, Haynes Workshop manual, trouble is they stopped printing them several years ago so second hand is the only way you'll find one.

309 handbook will cover it, tend to find these for pennies too :)

I'm sure I suggested to you it's in M@tt's signature. Save yourself £11.

EDIT: Attached is just the cylinder head part of the Haynes manual for you. It covers the XU5 & 9JA engines (1.6 & 1.9) as the procedures are the same. It even has colourful highlighted bits in. Scroll forward to get to cyl head removal, and everything else like valve clearances and cam belt fitting is all in there.

The full 160+ page version is in Matt's signature. This is just an extraction to get you going. It should have everything you need. :)

You can still buy them direct from Haynes, I got one about 3 weeks ago http://www.haynes.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/...1&langId=-1

Presumeably that has more detail then? as the service and repair manual covers the procedure in detail, and you stated he would need "the other" one hence my error!

Yeah, Haynes changed the style of their manuals about 10 years ago. The old-style ones are nearly twice as thick, cover things in more detail, and have loads more pictures.

In the case of the 205 manuals they both contain things that the other doesn't.

Either of them should be fine for doing a head gasket though.

But if you look at my post ^^^, I've got you just the juicy bit you need. Saves you rooting through the whole manual. :)
