Final Drive Side Gears

What do you guys use to retain the side gears when removing both drive shafts?

 

Good old Haynes suggests a length of 1" wooden dowel, does this work OK?

that's only applicable on VERY early BE1 gearboxes, you'll befine with nothing in there as they were modified and won't fall out.

Excellent, I feel better now (it's a BE3), I'll just tug those knackered brand new shafts out and send em back where they came from!!
