Older Bilstein Part Numbers

Since Bilstein changed their numbering, it's difficult to find out what's what!

 

I'd like to find out exactly what inserts my coilovers have, and it'd be handy to know what the 2 sets of rear dampers i have are too!

 

Does anyone have a copy of the old catalogue, or know how to reference these please?

One set is 47603 4600 2500

They are rear PTS 205 tarmac spec 460 / 250 ratings

Every PTS part I have had in the past I have kept a record of . Sad , but comes in handy now and again

 

Original spec for PTS dampers were as below

 

205 Forest 360/ 250

205 tarmac 460/250

306 Forest 500/275

306 tarmac 600/300

 

Front dampers are a little more difficult , as they moved teh numbers around a lot .

Just to rekindle this thread as i came across it whilst searching and not finding the answers i was after, the Part Number on my PTS/Bilstein Inserts is as follows;

 

56995 350 120

 

 

Judging by some of the numbers above, would this suggest that perhaps they aren't Tarmac items as i was led to believe when i bought them and as i now suspect?!

what length of damper rod have you got, from the end of the body to the start of the thread, or the end of the thread. thread should be 15mm from memory. this will give you an idea

The rod's 115mm roughly, and the thread's about 20mm.

Original inserts for the Challenge spec were 300-200 tarmac 250-120gravel

 

Baz it looks like you have a hybrid there belwo are the codes i've seen

 

Gravel front inserts 1908XDE7880M0 have seen 2402XDE7880M0 as well

Tarmac front inserts 3804XDE7880M0

115mm is the same as my Tarmac ones, the gravel are 160mm I think.

 

250/120 is correct for gravel, Andy Baker did find a source of 260/120 for similar amount to the old price of gravel inserts, instead of the daft new price of nearly £380 a pair (inc tax and shipping)

Anywhere between 120 to 240psi - 165psi would probably do all around.

 

Less gas pressure reduces the internal friction and lets the damper work better over rough roads, but go too low and you'll get damper cavitating on larger bumps/jumps - they'll loose some damping and blow through their travel faster than they should.

We tend to run a minimum of 200psi in our Bilstiens on the buggy.

 

The best bet is probably to have them filled to 200, then tweak them down if you feel the need, it will alter the ratio of comp/rebound damping slightly depending upon the pressure.

Argon will be fine.

Does anyone know what Bilstein rear shocks part no BNE 6813 are for ? I presume they are for a 205 but they are black in colour with black boots ?

they're B4 gas rear dampers for 205/306, standard road basically.

 

for base spec models not gti looking at the application listings.

In addition, i've just bought another set of fronts with odd inserts with rates of 250/180.

 

Pretty perfect for me given i don't quite want something as hard as Tarmac ones, some of the airfields i compete on are pretty bumpy/broken up!

Got the new ones, thanks Screwloose for collecting them for me!! :lol:

 

Had a bit of a play with the 2 sets last night and they're actually fairly different!

 

The 300/120 set are short inserts, overall length of about 510mm if that makes sense, and have 8" springs.

 

The newer (to me) 250/180 set being 580mm, running 10" springs.

 

The bodies are all the same, stamped with Bilstein logo etc, but there's differences between the 2 pairs, one set running larger spring pans etc to carry slightly larger dia. springs and lastly, a small thing but the sleeved top hat nuts for the top mounts are different, one set having a much larger hex-section of the top nut that will sit proud of the top mount, whereas the other is a much smaller profile. I'll grab some pics asap to help explain!

 

Could anyone confirm i'm correct in my thinking;

 

All will be interchangable - as long as the correct springs are used with the matching pans etc obviously?

 

The shorter inserts are a 'Tarmac' thing?

 

The larger dia. spring pans have been swapped just to give a wider range of spring choice essentially?

 

The top mount sleeve nuts are just randomly machined differently, there's no importance in it?

Shorter inserts will be to match shorter harder springs for tarmac, yes.

 

Gravel/Forest cars usually use larger diameter springs as it allows more travel out of a certain spring length, which matches those rates too, more compression for chassis control over whoops, and the heavier tyres, and less rebound for the softer springs.
