Cant Get Gears

Recommended Posts

pablo

Hi guys, solve one problem cause another. Got my bottom mount extended and now cant get reverse, 2nd & 4th are getting awkward.

I guess the linkage needs adjusting but havent got a clue how to do it. Any tips?

BE3 box on 2L 8v motor.

Cheers all.

Mine used to clang against the exhaust now and again as the exhaust bore was a lot larger than standard, this was when going for reverse only, when lengthening the mount you might have pushed the exhaust off its usual path a little especially if it is a larger bore?

If you have adjustable rods have you checked you have them all the right length?

Just by logic alone (and I may be completely wrong here) if you have used a longer bottom mount, you have pushed the engine and g'box forward, therefore all gears on the bottom of the "gate" (2nd 4th reverse) are going to be problematic unless you extend the rods by the same amount as the engine mount surely?

Like I say, could be wrong, but my brain is picturing the linkage and it's how it would appear to me.

I think youre bang on the money mate the rods arent long enough any more.

are there adjustments that can me made tho? Or off the shelf longer rods?

I need to do something as the car is un useable (parked nose into the drive too ffs)

You can get adjustable rods from Pug Racing (miles) but tbh I used my original rods for ages with the engine conversion so they should still work, how much have you extended the mount by? Mine was approx 30mm.

Have you had someone look under then car when you are trying to select gears? Is it physically hitting something or is it just not selecting the gears? When you go for reverse if it is the lift up type you actually push the lever/pivot underneath towards the exhaust so you should be able to see if it is hitting there.

ok been out tinkering there. no obstructions at all so its not a clearance issue. I cut the long rod and threaded it so its adjustable. I extended it a bit to compenstate for the gearstick now being a little further away. no joy

there is also a small adjustable bar on the side to side linkage where it joins the box. Tried messing with that but no joy.

all gears are fine bar reverse which wont hold. just pops back to neutral. If I hold the gearstick as far right and down as I can its not engaging as I just get crunch when releasing the clutch (with engine running).

Im now thinking the side to side linkage pivot on the subframe may be the issue as its further away now from the box too.

non lift up box btw.

2 q's, why have you extended the bottom mount, and can you not un-extend it??

to stop fouling of the servo mate. which worked 100%

been searching the forum (again) and found this pic:

which would imply that extending the long linkage was a waste of time as it only goes to the fork on the subframe which of course hasnt changed distance. doh.

looking at that pic the arm over to the box from the fork is adjustable so maybe it just needs lengthening.

doing my nut this lol.

Is there another method of allowing clearance from the mc/servo?

I could use a smaller servo but that seems a larger job. I thought extending the bottom mount was the way to do this? seems everyone does it.

That was my point, I have never seen it done another way?

Ah I see, its a turbo car, there was no mention of that above.

Mine is on standard mounts, but I use a non servo pedal box to get the clearance. Are you sure it is not the "l" bracket hitting something, I had to bend mine downwards to clear the wastegate actuator.

GOT IT SORTED had to adjust the longer arm from the fork to the box. had to shorten it (not sure why Im sure pythagarus knows) but now all good and can pop into reverse (which is handy!)
