dch1950 37 1 Cars Posted September 30, 2009 Hi all, Just a quick question. The new beam is now fitted to my 1.6, suspension set (thanx Tom), brakes ready for bleeding. Last job is to put the back box on the exhaust. I've bought a nice new clip and the box is fairly new, will a good scrub with a wire brush and the new clamp be sufficient for a good seal or will I need some gun gum? regards Dave H
Tom Fenton 1,548 Posted September 30, 2009 You'll need some goo.
pug_ham 245 3 Cars Posted September 30, 2009 I never use goo on my exhaust joints so give it a clean up & see how it matches the centre pipe flange. I have found back box olives to be pretty inconsistent shape but a few gently persuasive knocks with a hammer gets them into a better shape so it matches & selas with no goo. Graham. hengti 2 Posted September 30, 2009 is it an olive, or a sleeve joint? with olives, copper grease helps. with problem sleeve joints, i've started using the copper Loctite stuff (think Tom may have recommended it actually) - it seems more effective than the pastes (which break up eventually), and is much easier to clean up if it all needs to come off again
dch1950 37 1 Cars Posted October 1, 2009 (edited) Morning everyone, It's an olive. I wire brushed it (by hand) and have removed some previous "cement" (not much though - looks like a wipe round) will now put the drill/wire cup brush on it, then rub down with wet and dry. Interestingly, I followed several threads recommending the use of a bead of silicone sealant. I've got a tube of Loctite blue gasket sealant so I might experiment with that. regards Dave Edited October 1, 2009 by dch1950
Jose 0 Posted October 9, 2009 I would say to use a little bit of silicone, i find the seal between the two parts is never good enough without any sort of sealer. I always use gum gum exhaust paste, never really tried anything else, but as long as its high temp then should do the job

Seems ok and allows for final jiggling about before you do the nuts up. I , personally , don't think Gun Gum is satsfactory for a joint that can flex. Will be interesting to see how it holds up - literally. regards Dave H
