Starter Spinning Freely

Recommended Posts

scottish_lion

Appologies if this has been covered but I'm completely non-technical and not sure what to look for.

my starter is spinning but not turning the engine over. I can hear the fuel pump priming and the battery has plenty juice.

My friend says the pins are not engaging properly. and it's just spinning loosely.

Can anyone shed some light on this and what I will have to replace?

Feel free to redirect me to a previous post if it's relevant.

Many thanks x

may be worth giving the solenoid/starter a whack with a small hammer. Or sometimes an 1/2" socket entension can be used to give it a tap. Worth a try.

check that its still bolted securely to the gearbox, and that the gearbox is still attached to the engine block.

Tried the tap with the wheel brace, no luck, that's worked in the past when it's stuck.

Welshpug, forgive my ignorance but how do I check this? I'm not really sure what I'm looking for.

It's under that big silver bit (what is that btw?)

check that the starter is secured to the gearbox tightly and that the gear box is tightly attached to the engine, if the starter is spinning then its not going to be a solonoid problem as in that case it wouldnt spin.
