Found A Donor 1.6 Gti, Do I Need The Subframe.

Recommended Posts

Oberon

As above I have found a donor 1.6 gti to relieve of engine, loom, ecu, tank and pump.

All going to plan, this lot will go into my diesel skip. I was made aware that the stdt and gti subframe may not be the same.

Can anyone confirm or otherwise ?

Will I need the clocks or dash ?

Also is there any thing else I have not Listed that I'll need or that will make transplant less of a head ache ?

Thanks in advance.

Subframe is the same as GTi. You'll need the clocks if you want to use the rev counter. Gearbox. Exhaust will be different.

Send a PM to MR-205, he's done this.

noooo your doing it the wrong way. disel is the way forward. just put a intercooler in and fiddled bosh pump for 130-140bhp. and 50mpg.

If you have a base model diesel then the subframe is different to the GTI ones & imo its well worth swapping for the better wishbones & arb set up from the GTI but the STDT shuld have the ame subframe as a GTI.

Worth checking though, iirc Anthonys STDT had a base / XS model subframe fitted.

Seems Anthony's right :P

I've just had a look on servicebox and mines actually a base model.

There is one difference that I can see is the fastener that is visible behind the strut, see the green dot on here:

This matches the base model subframe on Servicebox

The DTurbo is listed as the same as GTi.

Which looks like this

Hope that clears it up, every days a school day.

You have a GTI subframe jimi but the actual subframe to shell mount is different & as used on the base model shell.

They are still mounted in the same place but use a different type of mount, GTI/STDT have one M10 (iirc) captive nut in the inner wing / chassis rail & the base model shells have two M6 captive nuts with a central hole for the mount to sit in, held with the two M6 bolts.

Hey, just saw this, As Graham says you clearly have the GTI subframe but mounted on the base model mounts, you also have the gti style struts with the hose guides on, mine was exactley the same, im fairly sure all the diesel`s use BE3 gear boxes so the shafts should be ok to re-use as will the gear linkages,

As i said in my pm try and get all the engine bay wiring, rear light + tank wiring and the guage wiring, will make it a bit easier to fit, also try and get the ecu mount that fits on the stering column, otherwise like me you will have to cable tie it up there lol.

if the engine comes with an oil cooler you will also have to take a fan out and attach that some how

Apart from that its a fairly easy fit to be honnest, i mean i did it with zero experiance at all :P

Good luck

Paul.

What a cool forum, thanks guys. I had'nt even checked this thread as I had'nt heard from the guy with the engine.

Have now though so hopefully I'll have an engine this weekend, so happy about that.

Just now actually thinking about stuff like wiring I am cacking it a bit.

Weejimmy I would have liked to done the 1.9 td, intercooler etc, just could'nt find one without immobilsed fuel pump.

Graham, yes sorry it is going into my STDT, which does have the gti wishbones and a arb.

Jimistdt, thanks for that info its hard to make out from the pic though, I'll have get under the car.

But from the info between you Graham and Mr-205 I gather the only difference is the way the subframe mounts to the

chassis ?

Mr-205 thanks for that, as above I am cacking it wondering why I make things so hard for myself.

I'll try and get as much wiring as I can, the guy is stripping it himself, I'll just be picking it up. He lives miles away.

As the engine is non-pas, I'm trying to get hold of a PAS pump, bracketry etc from Baz (off a 309).

A search revealed that PAS models did'nt have the oil cooler (front mounted), I assume due to lack of space.

Can someone confirm that the PAS pump and brackets from a 309 gti would be the same as 205gti ones.

This has ben confirmed as the same, apart from pipes.

Thanks all.

Yes, thats all the difference is, the actual subframe is identical between the STDT & GTI (& 309 GTI) but the way its mounted to the inner wing chassis rail is different.

This has ben confirmed as the same, apart from pipes.

The bracket & pump from a 309 GTI should be the same as those fitted to a 205 GTI with PAS & so will the pipework so it all should fit fine. The 309 PAS rack though will need the tracking adjusting quite a lot to shorten the track rod arms to 205 size.

IIRC the later PAS cars have the oil water heat echanger which relocates the oil filter to the front of the gearbox & has a different top hose with two pipes leading down to the heat exchanger but the very early 1.9's still had the air / oil cooler.

mate don't give up on diesels.

Don't worry about the immobilisier bit in the pump it's just 1 wire which need constant +.

If you worry about wiring then to run turbo diesel you only need if I remember right 4 wires even I could do that.

You've got such huge number of cars to take the engines from and you will always have the: oooh, s*it, it's diesel and it's faster than my car, look.

Alright, how's it going? Saw you the other day but I was incognito in the 206!

I've got a subframe still at my place and a set of clocks if you're interested?

Hi Si, I take it I was on foot when you saw me. I'll bear it in mind, if I do need either of those bits (should'nt though) I'll give you a shout. Thanks.
