Maddest Cams

Recommended Posts

Hi

What are the wildest cams I can get for my Mi engine...It is running carbs and is used for hillclimbs....

Not bothered about driveability, just needing a pair that :

1. will not cause car to fail MOT on emmissions

2. will work well in hillclimbs where mid range torque is required

Will i have have to opt for a higher compression and get uprated pistons...I know I will have to change to solid lifters etc...

Thanks

Rob

1 depends how well the package is put together and mapped, a Maxi will pass an MOT at 300 bhp+.

2, just rev it harder

You will need more compression, i.e different pistons.

...and money.

Even some of the wilder cams that Catcam sell require machining work to the head to get the lobes to fit.

Good luck, but I think you're mad.

A dremel sorts it, Dr.S

EDIT: I thought I'd just qualify that before the flames start. It was said in semi-jest, but certainly the hydraulic-friendly profile (#4900528) only need a little bit of aluminium taking off and I *did* do it with a dremel. Some of the wilder ones for solid lifters - well, I can't comment from experience....!

Sky's the limit really, you can go for full race profiles but you'll need to be revving way past the standard limit to make the most of them! Some food for thought, I had Newman Ph3 GTi6 cams in my engine (11.2:1 comp) which are 285 duration and advertised as a good midrange sprint cam, but without throttle bodies and an 8.5K rev limit they were useless.

If you want mid-range torque you won't want to go much more than 260 duration. If you want the wildest cams possible the only way its going to be useable is with a mad rev limit.

No full race cams will be useless in hillclimbs.....Maddest - I am meaning the hottest/maddest FOR HILLCLIMBS. I am not interested in a cam which comes in at 7k..!!!!

But the car sounds rather "distinctive" with such cams in...

It's a toouch lumpy at idle speeds below 900rpm. But other than that I would challenge anyone to tell it over a standard cam

In fact if you want it for Hillclimbs it'll be similar to the power delivery i'm aiming for with mine for Sprints, a stage 2 may push the power band up a little too high, i suppose it depends what gearbox you're going to run.

Tbh 4x4 cams are so lumpy at idle it probably would pass for a std one. Not that it matters. Although my stage1 isn't that lumpy strangely! Although it's on bodies/management.

Right, well your first post was a bit unclear.

Newman Ph2's have served me well, I saw a 13bhp peak gain and a good 5-10bhp throughout the range. Made an extra 7-10lbft throughout too.
