Internitent Rough Running

Recommended Posts

SWINNEY

Hi All

I have a J reg 1.9 CTI that I have owned for just over two years I ran it for a few weeks then the Rear Beam when followed by the starter motor went.... anyway it was off the road until this summer and has ran like fine but every I took it out today and gave it a bit of stick and when I slowed down into the village it started kangaroing and running rough.

I have had it do this a couple of times when I first got it but the next time I took it out it ran fine.

I have had it serviced and the Cam belt replaced this year.

Two things it does have is a bit of a ticking noise when it run and the oil pressure gauge I reads low (I asked a mechanic friend about it and he recons it a wiring/sensor fault as the car doesn't knock / smoke) i.e it doesn't get much above 25% of the range and drops to nearly zero but the warning lamp doesn't come on.

Now now I ve set the scene I need to know were to start diagnosing my intermitent rough running.

Mark

The guage is most likely a dodgy sensor or wiring. The warning light runs on a separate switch (should come on with the ignition before the engine starts). As long as this light doesn't come on, you should be fine. Just give it regular changes.

Rough running could be caused by a few things. How does it idle?

Check the colour of your plugs as these can give an indication of health on the fueling side of things.

Check the health of your ignition components too as these can cause intermittent problems once the car warms up.

It idle's fine about 900 - 1000 ish steady

Plug leads look newish

AFM has been opened up at sometime (black gunk holding the lid on)

Will have a look at the plugs, dizzy etc at the weekend

Any Ideas what the ticking could be?

.. cracked exhaust manifold , blown manifold to head gaskets , blown downpipe mesh ring , valve clearances , injectors ... needs a bit of investigation  but i'll bet on cracked exh. manifold or valve clearances as a more common stuff ..

Had a look at the plugs and they have a slight tinge of black round the outer ring part but the electrode part is all clean they have only been in about 500 miles (A Garage did the service for me).

Dizzy, leads all look ok but I arn't any sort of expert no corrosion etc a dizzy looks in good shape.

One thing I did notice when I took it out today was that once hot the Idle is low around 500 and the car was horrible to drive in traffic so my problem could be getting worse.

Ticking and rough running sounds like a high tension leak!
