Removing Tyres From Rims – Is There A Diy Method?

Recommended Posts

Atari Boy

Is there a way of removing tyres without using the proper tyre machines?

I get on okay with my tyre place but they still charge so I was wondering, is it possible to remove an old tyre of a Speedline without trashing the tyre and if so are there any tips?

Thanks

Jonny

It is possible but bloody hard work, save yourself the grief and pay the tyre shop!

Having said that its worth shopping around, some places will take the piss to remove tyres, others are cheap.

I think you are right Tom, I will need help. My place charges £5 to fit and balance so with luck it might be less for a straight tyre off job.

i used to do it this way

jack up my old sierra with a trolley jack as high as possiple

insert sierra jack in side and slide wheel under sierra jack

lower car on trolley jack until the bottom of the sierra jack sits on tyre wall

lower off trolley jack

and one broken bead

repeat for other side

sometimes you have do to this 3/4 times

My local 2nd hand tyre cowboys wanted £14 a wheel to fit and balance - You can imagine my answer to that!

Bloody hell five quid is uber cheap dude. Those new tyre machines aren't cheap. It would cost you more in cans of stella to calm you down after the frustration of trying to get one off the rim with levers. And you would prob end up doing more damage to yourself. Some tyres are so tight to get onto the bead of the rim its unreal...

I once cut a tyre off with a hacksaw. Never again.

If the tyre machine was working i'd say bring them down Jonny, but alas, it isn't so not much help i'm afraid! :excl:
