Slightly Puzzled Catcams Pulleys

Recommended Posts

Andy F

Hi

Im currently putting my engine back together and have fitted my new catcams pulleys. I have a tried using the pin that comes with the pulleys to lock the pulley into the timing holes.

It seems that the hole doesnt line up with the ones on the head it seems to be to far out.

I wondered if anyone else had any experience of this?

Do i need to change the setting to line up the other holes?

I may be wrong, but they look identical to the pulleys another member had some runout issues with are they sitting parallel to the head? In the first shot it doesnt look right, but may be the camera angle?

That pin is to lock the pulley outer to inner when timing. You can't use the OE timing holes with aftermarket pulleys such as these, you need to use the lift at TDC or peak angle methods.

What he said. Also be aware that some people have had issues with these pulleys wobbling when fitted, so I'd make sure you check that when you have the engine running again.

I have had a look around at both the methods of timing and wondered if anyone could give advise for an mi.

I rather avoid if i can getting dial gauges as i would proberly never use them again.

I have read about using the spark plug method etc. Is this accurate enough?

Thanks

What's the spark plug method?

To be honest, a dial gauge is inexpensive and you'd be surprised at the amount of stuff you end up using it for, specially if you play with engines a lot. I picked mine up for about £30 with a magnetic stand.

My advice is: don't be tempted to save a few quid and do a bodge method. The chances of it ending in disaster far outweigh the cost saving.
