Pins In End Of Drive Shafts

Recommended Posts

andyjstone

I changed my drive shafts and hubs recently and one of the parts (I think it was the new hub bearings) came with the little pins that go in the end of the drive shaft to hold the nut on.

However, the new GKN 1.9 drive shafts I bought don't have a hole in the end to put the pin in (and my old 1.6 shafts didn't either).

I have seen some pics on here where people have this pin fitted, so I was wondering why my shafts don't have a hole for it and is it necessary?

There are two types of fittings on the driveshafts.

One has a hole for a clip, the other has keyways for stave nuts.

Both do the same job, stops the nut coming loose, though the clips are re-useable.

OK, better stave them nuts then!

Yep, you'll need to do that for the MOT!

I was more worried about the wheels coming off when I take it on track next week

technically yes, but if the centrecaps are fitted to the wheels they wont be able to see the driveshaft nuts so it wont actually fail as they aren't allowed to remove anything...
