Mi16 Snapped Belt

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, one of the lads i know has similiar spec mi16 to mine except with big valves,3 angle seats and pair of cams.Other day he was turning corner into a side street

and the cambelt snapped. So he replaced it but now it wont start so iam getting it recovered to my workshop this week to have a look and probably end up taking head off.Whats the chanced the valves are bent, obviously i will do compression test first and leak test and if fine will double check his timing as he not the best

mechanically minded haha.Apparently he had all the headwork done at place called powerhouse which i never heard of.

Mi16 heads don't need any 'work'; and that includes big(ger) valves. Triple-cut valve seats seem to be a good move though.

Very sad to hear this has happened. It's really impossible to tell what's occurred without the head off as you say.

There's an ultra slim chance that no valves hit anything, but that's unlikely. If they did, then it's likely one or more are bent.

Beyond that is the risk of piston crown and bore damage; there just isn't anyway of knowing until the head is off.

A few on here (including me and JRod) have been very lucky with Mi or GTI6 engines having cam belt issues and getting away with the least damage. I hope that's the case for you and your mate too.

At least now if it didn't have them before, it can have a new belt, water pump and valve stem seals. :P

I managed to get away with a cam pulley coming off on the rollers, unfortunately I don't think this can happen more than once in a thousand years. :P

Your mate really should have had a look inside the head before he went sticking a new belt on and trying to get it to work, there's a strong chance he could have done even more damage.

Do a compression test and that should be pretty conclusive. If there's no compression on any of the cylinders then you can bet that you have some bent bits.

I had the car towed into my place today and did a compression test.Result was erm no compression apart from 1 cylinder which was around 130 so

bit low anyway.I will remove head wednesday and get some pics up as the porting on the inlets looks quite a good job.I thought it was called powerhouse the head

was originally modified at but its actually called minisport in lancashire. They used 36mm inlet valves from toyota carina.I will get some pics of car up as the wheel

arches are quite good whoever done them, they are from a austin montego haha.

Removed the head this afternoon and basically i can count virtually all inlet valves are bent and at least 4 exhaust are.Just need to get owner to pick the head up

and send it away to get it sorted out as my usual engine recon place by me doesnt do 3 angle seats.
