Starter Motor Fault

Recommended Posts

jimmer

The valeo (smaller) starter motor on my j4rs engine spins but does ingage into the ring gear and turn over engine. This also happens when you bypass ignition switch with small piece of wire straight to starter from 12v source when still fitted to the car so it want be solenoid switch live. when i tested the starter off of engine using jump leads the solenoid ingages and flicks gear into position fine and spins starter as it should. I've tried this with 2 differant starters and both are the same. Can some one shed some light on the problem? I've also had the same problem when rallying to restart car after a stall on stage when engine is hot.

Any help much appreciated

both starters are fairly new, well maybe a couple of years old at most. The gear and slide are completley free moving. I cant get my head around it.

found out it was the clutch on the starter that was knackered on both starters. I tested it on floor with jump leads and a block of wood pressed against the drive gear, which stopped when any pressure was put on it. Has any one else experianced this problem? it is a high compression j4rs engine. Do diesels have a more heavy duty clutch in them because of the extra compression?
