What Sump?

Recommended Posts

Im unsure of what sump I will need for my bottom end.

I will be using a Mi block, 1.9 8v crank / rods , 8v head, sump baffle.

Am I looking at a Mi finned jobbie? 8v jobbie? if so spacer plate or not? I will need the corrosponding dipstick and tube for what ever sump I end up with yes?

Argh so many questions

the 8v and mi block are basically the same except the mi got spray bars, so its up to you what sump you use.

the 1.9 block needs the spacer plate when used with a steel sump and probably does not need it with the alloy one.

only in the 102ps 1.9 the steel sump was higher and there was no spacer.

You will need to keep the original mi16 dipstick and tube mate with whatever sump you use.

Because it comes from the top of the sump, it gives a level relavent to the oil pump pick up, which is obviously fixed to the engine,, as is the dipstick tube and dipstick.. hard to explain, but keep the originals lol

That depends on what you're going to do with it. If just going shopping, cruising around etc., then an open sump is fine. I personally would never fit one (whether steel or aluminium). If planning on spirited driving, then an alloy XU10 sump would be my choice. These at least have a baffle. If you're going to race it, then the XU10 sump + spacer plate + extended pickup is recommended as the minimum.

Depends on what ur gonna use it for:

Normal road usage: standard sump

Heavy road usage: x10 with baffle

track usage: constella sump baffle

Even better: Dry sump, but that's quite expensive

Thanks for the replys guys :excl:

I have a seperate sump baffle (whatever longmans used to supply, like the constella one)

Mainly fast road, but I will be doing track days in the summer when ever possible.

Im still a bit confused though (embarrassing considering the helpful replys) :D Will the Mi sump's integral baffle interfear with my longmans seperate baffle? So far it sounds like my best bet is 1.9 8v + spacer + Baffle?

Dry sump is certinally out of the question!

You have to grind a fair amount off the eggbox baffle to fit it in the finned sump, I just went with the tin sump myself and that worked wonders, you do need a bigger oil cooler though (on the 16v) so far I've been using no oil cooler on a tin sump on the 8v with no oil temp issues but that's been fast open circuits (the ring)
