Strange Case

Basically i bought what was supposadly an XU9 engine a good while back to convert the 1.4 xs i had.

I did the conversion and fitted bike carbs to get around the injection systems.

Half way through however i was told that the engine was infact the xu5 because it was missing the spacer plate.

I carried on anyway and drove the car for a while with no issues, it went like a train and was fine.

Pulled the engine apart today as i want to change piston rings and big end bearings and found out that the bearing size was 50mm diamiter which i have been told is xu9.

This got my curious so i pulled a piston/rod out of an early xu5 block a compared the piston and rod to the one out of my current engine.

The rods were shorter on my current to the one on my early xu5 which would explain that my current engine is infact the xu9 it was sold as.

My question is why do the xu9 engines have the spacer plate because mine ran fine without one.

Any ideas.

It'll either be a non-GTi 1.9 8v engine, or someone has swapped the sump at some point. Is the engine code stamp still there?

The plate is technically a stiffening plate to strengthen the block, the same as Mi's, but I've never had any issue running without it long-term and it's one less thing to leak frankly.

Where is the code, i have seen something, what would the code be for gti 1.9 8 valve as i definatly think its a gti engine.

I was told that without the plate on the 1.9 the bottom ends would contact the sump and this was supposadly someone who knew pugs.

It's near the alternator - should be D6B for a 1.9 non-CAT GTi engine.

Heh, that old chestnut again. The 1.9 GTi sump is shallower due to the thickness of the spacer, but a 1.6 GTi (or any other non-GTi 1.9) sump is the same overall depth as the 1.9 GTi sump and spacer combo.

No engine code then i saw a code in the block casting.

Ok, my sump is the same as my early 1.6 engine but the timing belt tensioner is the eccentric type which was on later model 1.6 engines and 1.9 engines.

This has really confused me as i would like to fine out what engine i have.

Also my early 1.6 engine has d6b on the engine block where you said.

D6B is the 1.9....The 1.6 is the B6D

As far as I'm aware, 1.6 GTi's never had an escentric tensioner - it was only on post-92 1.9's that I've seen, around the same time that the 1.6 GTi engine ceased production.

Assuming the escentic tensioner hasn't been retrofitted, and the engine is definitely a 1.9, then it'll probably be either a 1.9 CAT GTi engine (DKZ) or a 1.9 low-comp engine (DFZ) - I'm not sure that 1.9 non-CAT engines ever had the escentric tensioner fitted as standard - certainly I've not seen one, even on the last of the non-CAT cars.

1.6 GTi engines should be B6D and B6E for the most part - could be that someone has re-blocked your 1.6 lump with a 1.9 block (they're the same)

Right, well i don't know the history of the engine apart from the fact that i was told it must be the 1.6 as it was missing the spacer plate.

The head is the later style with the bigger valves and the crank and rods are 1.9 spec so i have a 1.9 engine with no spacer plate and no identification mark.

I always did suspect it being the 1.9 as it goes like a rocket and it will be recieving new rings and bearings so should be ok.

We will see how it performs on the rollers next month, that will give a good indication.

If you've got the motor apart at the moment, can you not measure the stroke?? You'd know for sure then what capacity it is then won't you?
