Assuming The Worst...

Since getting the 205 (2L 8v turbo) Ive been periodically smelling burning oil. Turbo is refurbed so I dont think its that. Its not smoking really either (even on RR run).

But lets say its the rings (worst case) what am I looking at to get them sorted?

- engine out?

- How much is DIYable on the driveway? I could remove and split an engine but have no metalworking facilities or experience in engine internals (bar changing a head gasket).

- How likely is it that the block would be damaged/worn/ ie no good?

- If the block is scrap what are my options?

Compression test showed approx 140-150psi on all cylinders (no oil added).

Appreciate the help guys thanks.

From those compression test results i would say that the rings are fine, certanly not shot, and that it is likely to be the stem seals in which case it would be a head off and head rebuild job. While you have the head off you can certanly do a visual inspection on the bores which will likely tell you if the rings are excessivly worn or not.

that would be very pleasant!

Been scanning the archives and found this quote

wrong oil those turbos need an expensive 10/40 fully syn to not smoke, my turbo conversion smoked like a beast at idle as soon as i put proper oil all smoke gone!

Ive oil here to do a change (Mobil1 10/40) so hopefully it will do the job. Be very very nice.

ok redone my compression test there with the engine hot (cold before) and TB open (closed before) and read 170-180 all over.

3 x spark plugs had oil on the threads however only been in a fortnight. All looked much like this:
