Mi16 -> S16 : Alternator/engine Mount Options

Recommended Posts

brumster

Quickly want to check some things before I buy the wrong bits :)

I'm swapping my 1.9 mi16 for a 2.0 iron lump. As such, the engine mount needs to change and presumably the alternator mount too.

What engine mount/alternator bracketry combinations can I go for? I run just the 205 alternator (no power steering pump or aircon pumps) and I'd like to be able to keep the original alternator because it's an old 100amp Group A item which would be a shame to down-grade.

Do I specifically need an engine mount from a 306 or will a 405 one do? Will any XU10 engine mount suffice, or should I concentrate on getting one that was specifically for an S16-headed iron block, whatever the car (306/405)? Any pictures of ones that I can go for (are they different even, I don't know)....?

Stupidly I let the original mount go as I'd been told I didn't need it, but that clearly isn't the case looking at the front of the blocks and comparing :) they are clearly quite different!

Cheers,

Dan

306 or 405 non-a/c item is what you need, they are the same, the 8v alternator will fit too.

Ok, further help needed.

I've managed to source a mount, but it's the one with all the power steering bollocks on it. My old 8v alternator doesn't fit - the gap is different on the mounting points.

So I assumed I've got the wrong mount, looking on the parts CD the two-part engine mount for XU10J2's has different alternator part#'s listed.

We need a picture thread with all the engine mounts and what the options are

Early 306 "except P/S A/C" #5706 71

Late 405 #5706 71

The same cars but *with* power steering are listed as part numbers #5706 69 (replaced with 5706E3,570352,575153).

Problem is cross-referencing the 80 amp options with the 205, none obviously share the same alternator model.

Welshpug - when you say non-AC, do you mean the mounts for non-PS and non-AC (ie. #7506 71 above) or are the PS-only ones also usable (ie. #5760 69). On the parts CD they look pretty much identical.

Any other ways I can get an 8v alternator onto the hefty engine mount I've got - I don't fancy cutting down the faces of the alternator mount points, to get it slim enough to fit wouldn't leave a massive amount of metal there any more I don't think ;)

I used the PAS but non-a/c bracket, it came on the 405 engine, made an adjuster to fit across the top to the top engine mount bracket, used a 205 diesel alternator, which was fitted to the alloy gti block.

how far from not fitting is it? they do have an insert which does move, could try pressing that into the tab on the alternator a little more and see if it'll go on.

3mm bar (20mm wide IIRC) bent 90 at the end, 6mm hole drilled in it on the 90 end, 8mm on the block end, and an 8mm wide slot, original 205 adjuster bolts.

Ah, vastly different, yes.

Pics of my situation :-

The bottom one is with the pulley aligned as best as I can by sight alone. Remove the insert and the right-most lug (as you're looking at it) would be fine, but there's nothing you could do with the left-hand lug - you'd have to take back the dizzy casting which I don't want to do....

ah, that's the aircon setup, DOH!

alternator looks fine, just not for that bracket, the bracket I pictured is significantly lighter!

they have quite a different set of lugs on the alternator, and are easy to get so I wouldn't modify your's if you are keeping that rather hefty assembly.

keep the top arm as that is the same, but the two piece non-a/c setup off an earlier car is ideally what you want.

If you're not gonna use a steering pump, get another enginemount. This one is exactly the same as the gti6, the steering pump is mounted at the top, the alternator right beneath it.

You say you're gonna swap it, why not use the mounts/brackets from the Mi16 and put them on the 2.0 iron block?

I think it's a direct swap.

Look for a citroen Xantia 2.0 8v or 405/306 2.0 8v without A/C (they mostly are without A/C). They all have the mounts you need if you can't use the Mi16 mounts.

Bah, no luck finding a proper engine mount so I've made up a little bracket to adapt the alternator to the lower half of the engine mount I've got. I'll now chop the mount in two, leaving just the top part (the engine mount itself) and the lower bit with the alternator mount on, and dump half the weight associated with the chunk in the middle :) !!

That's it - engine is going in on Sunday now, whether it likes it or not :D
