My Horns Stopped Working...

Recommended Posts

chocolate_o_brian

Happened a couple weeks back, and it's not worked since. The headlights etc, and high beam still work, just I don't get anything when I push in the horn button (phase 1.5 88 1.9GTi).

What should I be checking as this is a new 'un for me

I shall have a look. Nothing to check voltage mate, and I didn't even know where it was situated LOL.

run a couple of wired from the battery to see if the horn works that will tell you if its the horn or the wiring / switch / other.

can you hear a whirring sound when you press the button?

I've seen a few where the horn has just got filled with water and the plug/ earth have corroded a bit. Try giving everything a little clean up.

I've just been out after finishing work. Had the n/s light off and looked around. The 2 connectors that go into the horn look fine, as does the wiring. Bit dusty but no corrosion or mank etc. Had the underside of the steering column off too incase something has worked loose - thats fine aswell.

I'm not electrical so won't try anything further, so my only 2 options now seem to be a knackered stalk button for the horn or a deeper electrical issue. As said earlier, all the lights work fine and just double checked afterwards for good measure.

you just need a spare bulb and a couple of lengths of electrical cable - from battery to horn; from horn leads to bulb (might need an assistant to press the horn button in)

Hmm, no assistants available (Mrs doesn't count), will get a mate to investigate tomorrow me thinks... I can shock myself off a toaster :D (Retarded you see!)

Forgot to update this. Went to a mates who had a testing kit for wires etc. Took the horn off and it looked knackered. Then turned it upside down, it worked - ish. Then wiggled it and pressed the button and it resembled a strangled duck.

So the horn itself was dead. Got one for £8 from a local motor factors and my car now sounds like the only gay in the village... proper high pitched ghey horn but it works.

Can have some proper small man syndrome beeping when the stupid twats in 4x4s get in my way now! :)
