Gearbox Oil

Recommended Posts

Sorry to ask a stupid question, but how do I fill up the gearbox oil, is it that plastic nut on the top by the battery?

If so, do I just fill it up until it won't take any more?

Should the plastic nut have a hole in the top??

OK, enough stupid questions

There's a 19mm bolt in the end cover behind the passenger wheel. Remove that and then fill up until oil starts coming out of that hole.

Filling up through the top is fine, and probably the easiest way.

There's a 19mm bolt on the side of the gearbox, which is the level plug. Fill up the gearbox (either through the level plug hole, or through the hole at the top near the battery) until oil begins to trickle from the level plug hole, and then it's correct. In my experience, it's usually around 1.7-1.8 litres you need, rather than the specified 2.0 litres.

Is that the one that is on the end facing you when you take the wheel off, at the bottom right of the end casing or somewhere else?

Facing you with the passenger wheel off - it's the odd one out of the other bolts holding on the end cover :)

Is that for BE3? I have a BE1 and the filler is pretty much on top of the gearbox near the battery

It is BE3 and I think he is talking about the level plug, the filler plug on BE3 is on the top like BE1

Totally failed to get the level plug out, I think Miles must have put it in with an impact driver last time he had it. I've put in about 1.8 litres and I'll try and get it in the garage at some point to get the plug out!
