Tappety Top End But Only Sometimes?

Recommended Posts

Puzzling me a bit: car is a 1.6 standard engine with about 10,000 miles since rebuild. It's fine and quiet when cold, and fine and quiet when driven hard but if left to idle it starts to sound tappety/a bit rattly. I've been keeping a close eye on the guages and the water temperature is quick to rise but the fan kicks in and keeps things well under control. The oil temperature never really rises other than on a hard drive. In normal driving the guage often stays down! Oil pressure good when cold, drops a little when hot but never falls below the 1st white mark idling. Car pulls well when hot or cold.

Suggestions as to the cause?

Cracked exhaust manifold?

Also did you use original Peugeot manifold - head gaskets & downpipe fitting kit?

I've had aftermarket ones of both of these fail intermittently before but since replacing them with oe parts have never had any problems.

They generally cost silmilar (or less) than aftermarket gaskets as well.

Graham.
