Gti6 Downpipe Modifying

Recommended Posts

djinuk

Ok i have my gti6 engine in , and i have my 1.9 gti downpipe, ive offered it up and can see i need to shorten it quite a bit and also i need to remove the split, however ive noticed this split goes right the way down the downpipe.

Do i need to cut the pipe in half to remove this and then weld it all back together ?

with mine i cut the flange off

then cut off around 6" of pipe thus removing the flange, then welded it back together at the right angle

lol , damn, where on earth do i sorce a downpipe without a split.

Failing that your idea sounds good spiky, however my downpipe almost looks like the split carries along about 15 inches.

The downpipe is made from 2 D shaped pipes welded together so you can't cut the split out, you'll have to find one without (old 1.6) like Welshpug says. I just used one with a split and didn't have any funny results, although I only did that because Peugeot gave me the wrong downpipe and I couldn't return it. :D

Look a little closer, its not obvious viewed from the flange (oo-err) but when you cut it up to shorten it you'll see. That, or only the genuine Peugeot ones are made that way.

Cheapo replacements either have no split (like mine :D ) or a crap split, tacked in that doesn't run the length of the pipe. An early 1.6 downpipe will have a smaller diameter.

think i may make this pipe from scratch, mine is defo two ds that goes really far down the downpipe so i dont think i can modify it, i may go to the scrapyard and see if i can remove a downpipe off a 406 or somthing with a similar engine.

You could get a downpipe off a GTi6 or VTS if you're lucky, or a 406 with the RS engine if you look hard enough.

thats the plan, im sure i saw a 406 with the same engine as the gti6 only the inlet was plastic and the exhaust manifold appeared to be much similier in design

Hmm, after a quick browse on Servicebox it looks like the cat is going to be a problem on standard 306 and 406s.

bugger does the cat sit in the downpipe then ?, i was only going to get one off a 406 in order to have a downpipe with no split.

its only welded at the top section :D

Just be careful, double check the overall length of the exhaust so that it doesn't clash at the back box end.

I have a Xsara Vts exhaust if its any use.

It might cost you a couple of horsepower but nothing noticeable.
