205 Gentry Starting Woes

Recommended Posts

PUGPIRATE

I posted an item regarding this same issue a few weeks back, and thought to have resolved the problem. Unfortunately, it would appear that my self-congratulations were premature!

My 205 Gentry refuses to start. The starter motor beavers away in what sounds like a strong fashion, but there is no spark. The fuel pump does not appear to be kicking in at any point during the ignition sequence (although I have confirmed that the fuel pump does actually work by hooking it up directly to a 12v supply to test - and the fuses are fine!).

The tachometric/fuel pump relay was originally mooted as a possible culprit, but the relay seems to open and close appropriately and the problem was not remedied when I put in a replacement relay earlier today. The last time that this happened I eventually managed to get it going by pumping the gas pedal a few times and the vehicle unexpectedly sprang into life - running perfectly well for the next fortnight or so. Unfortunately, the stubborn beast has now been stranded in its parking space for some days with no immediate likelihood of resumed service. The only positive to the whole business is that this has happened at home during the morning rather than in a remote supermarket car park some where or at work.

Can you guys suggest anything? I have read that testing spark-fuel-compression (in that order) is the first thing to do, but reading the back of the spark tester that I was going to buy from Halfrauds today, it specifically stated that it should be hooked up to an engine running at idle. I can't get that far, so it seems a little redundant! Am I missing something?

To re-iterate; starter turns, fuel pump is not kicking in, no spark at all.............

Eagerly anticipating your expert help as always!

I realised that it was the wrong section too late! Have messaged the moderator to let him know.
