Rubbing Sound

Recommended Posts

BERTMAN

above 30mph my car has started to make a new noise, sounds like something is rubbing...

it happens when the clutch is either in or out, and even when rolling in neutral but sometimes when the clutch is engaged causes the noise to be louder, goes away breifely when cornering slightly at speed, and also sometimes goes away when accelerating.. noise also seems to dissapear breifly at higher motorway speeds. It always happens when you let off the throttle, but if you do it gently then sometimes it wont happen. I jacked the car up and have noticed that the N/S CV joint gaitor has split and has released its grease all over the place, but would a knackered CV joint cause this sound, or isit more likely the diff or something else?

PS car is a GT (TU3s with an MA box)

The joys of mysterious noises. Sometimes only way is elimination (and will assume its not a wheel bearing sound) ,first thing i would do is go down local scrappy and try find a decent driveshaft and throw it on.

What sort of a rubbing sound? Like metal grinding on metal? metal on rubber? Rubber on rubber even?

Does the frequency of the noise change with engine or road speed?

Nothing like a good mystery.

yeh its not wheel bearings, or lack of oil in gbox, or brakes binding... dosent get faster with speed, but does get louder. Hard to describe a sound but its not a metal grinding sound, maybe metal on rubber but its hard to tell, its just quite high pitched and loud lol... will whack on a new driveshaft and see what happens... any other ideas?
