I wouldn't recommend painting the block black, it makes it look permanently dirty and you can't spot oil leaks. I would suggest silver or red like it is now!

I'm going to put the cat amongst the pigeons and say I wouldn't paint it. Paint is an insulator, you want it to loose heat, not keep it in. Fair enough if it's a steel block to stop it rusting but I wouldn't paint an alloy block, or box for that matter

^ dont paint the block!

I did mine yellow many moons ago and regretted it the second I started putting paint on it--Leave it spotless and clean and it will look great!!

if the engine, especially the box were free of previous paint, i would possibly leave it clear. but as the engine will be sitting in a black engine bay, i'm strangely drawn to silver :)

I agree with this. Plus the fact that paint does not adhere well to alloy usually.

I can't see it making all that much difference. Most of the heat from an engine goes out of the exhaust, and the rest into the cooling system. The amount of heat lost from the block to the air is minimal.

And yes it can be a right mare to find oil leaks with a black engine... ... I suppose this could be a plus, hiding oil leaks....

Mad.

I would personally paint it silver as it makes everything look brand new :D

Heres how my 106 came out-

Think I should have done the gearbox aswell now

how do you get the paint to stick to the alloy and stay stuck?

use etch primer, Upol Acid Etch #8 or soemthing like that £20 fr 1ltr in a tin, which last ages/does lots of painting. In my case 10 wheels, inside of floor pan and engine bay

I think the chrome looks a bit too "bling" as it looks like you're going for the mint standard look. Silver would be ok but I think black is a good contrast to the rest of the engine

My first engine came out like this...

Bare block and box, red head and black cam cover.

Go with the black cam cover.

I didn't see this thread in time before the block was painted, but there is another option which I do now. I get my gearbox casings soda blasted as well as engine blocks. Then wash them with a hot pressure washer blow them off and dry well, then lacquer with frosts clear vht paint that is also petrol proof. The soda will also dissolve, so any you don't get it will be out of the engine within the 1st oil change.

You could also get the block bead blasted, BUT the only way to make sure that it is 100% clean is to get it ultra sonic cleaned which is probably very expensive. No one has anything like that over here in Northern Ireland, but there are places in England that can do it. Again then lacquer the items well, and then you are left with a brand new looking block/gearbox. I have seen these results on diff casings and you would swear they were painted silver but they are not, just a clean surface lacqured and it won't flake off over time like paint!

I hear neutral colours are good, that way when you come to sell it on people won't be turned off..

we used mostly barley white, which is a bit off white, but not really magnolia.

Christ! That looks awesome. Just about to commence stripdown and you've inspired me. Not chrome for me though, original all the way.
